South Africa: Record-strength cyclone Freddy pounds Mozambique after making second landfall

JOHANNESBURG, March 12 (Reuters) - Cyclone Freddy battered central Mozambique on Sunday after making landfall for a second time in a month, breaking records for the duration and strength of tropical storms in the southern hemisphere.

Communications and electricity supply in the storm area have been cut so the extent of the damage and number of casualties were not clear.

South Africa to host BRICS summit in late August

JOHANNESBURG, March 2 (Xinhua) -- South Africa will host the BRICS Summit in Gauteng Province on Aug. 22-24, said Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele on Thursday.

Gungubele made the remarks while briefing the media about the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

This year's summit will be held under the theme: "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism," according to the minister.

Russia denies plan to test new missile off South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The Russian military denied Wednesday that it was planning to test its new Zircon hypersonic missiles during naval drills off the coast of South Africa this week that will coincide with the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.

China’s navy also is participating in the Indian Ocean exercises, which come at a time when Russia’s relationship with the West is at its lowest point since the Cold War, and ties between China and the United States are under serious strain.

CAPE TOWN, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster on Thursday evening to address the country's electricity crisis.

"The National Disaster Management Center has consequently classified the energy crisis and its impact as a disaster. We are therefore declaring a national state of disaster to respond to the electricity crisis and its effects," said Ramaphosa while delivering his 2023 State of the Nation Address in Cape Town.

“Load shedding damages businesses, disrupts households, compromises the provision of social services, and affects the safety and well-being of the people,” Ramaphosa, also president of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, made the remarks at the ANC’s National Executive Council lekgotla.
