AIPAC is a ‘hate group’ ‘weaponizing anti-Semitism’, says US Congresswoman

14 Feb 2020; MEMO: The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, better known as AIPAC, has been condemned as a “hate group” by US Congresswoman Betty McCollum. The Democratic representative for Minnesota denounced the pro-Israeli group in a scathing response to an advert which she described was “weaponizing anti-Semitism” to “incite followers” of the lobby group to attack her and other Democratic colleagues.

BDS resolution passed by US’ University of Illinois student body

14 Feb 2020; MEMO: The student body at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) passed a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) resolution this morning that calls on the university to divest from companies that do business with Israel.

Following more than six hours of debating, the final vote was 20 in favour, nine against and seven abstentions.

Erdogan raises Kashmir in Pak Parliament, says issue close to both countries

Islamabad, Feb 14 (PTI) Notwithstanding India's objection, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday once again raked up the Kashmir issue, vowing that Ankara will support Pakistan's stand as it is a matter of concern to both the countries.

Addressing a joint session of Pakistan's Parliament, Erdogan, who arrived here on a two-day visit, announced that Turkey will back Pakistan in its efforts to come out of the Grey List of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) which is meeting this week in Paris.

India: NSA slapped against Dr Kafeel Khan

Lucknow, Feb 14 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh police has slapped the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against doctor Kafeel Khan, who is in jail for allegedly making a speech at the Aligarh Muslim University against the new citizenship law.

"NSA has been slapped on Dr Kafeel. He will remain in jail," Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Akash Kulhari to PTI over phone.

India: SC notice to J&K on plea challenging Omar's detention

New Delhi, Feb 14 (PTI) The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday on a plea filed by Sara Abdullah Pilot challenging the detention of her brother and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah under the Public Safety Act.

A bench, comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Indira Banerjee, said it would hear on March 2 Pilot's plea challenging Abdullah's detention.

Brussels seeks to bring home children of Belgian militants in Syria

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Belgium is working to bring home all children of Belgian militants held in refugee camps in Syria, providing their mothers’ consent, Foreign Minister Philippe Goffin said.

So far, 42 children in two camps in northeastern Syria have been identified as those of Belgian militants, according to aides of Belgian Foreign Minister Philippe Goffin.

Ahead of Trump's India visit, US senators raise human rights, religious freedom issues in Kashmir

India: Cong to start 2nd phase of anti-CAA march from Thursday

Guwahati, Feb 12 (PTI) Opposition Congress on Wednesday announced it would start its second phase of 'Padyatra' (march) against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act across the north bank of Brahmaputra from Thursday.

The 'padyatra' will begin from Behali in Sonitpur and conclude in Nalbari on February 20.
