Myanmar 'unwilling' to probe Rohingya abuse, UN must act: rights envoy

Yangon, Oct 9 (AFP) Myanmar is "unable and unwilling" to investigate its abuses against Rohingya Muslims, a UN rights envoy has said, bolstering calls for the country's generals to be hauled before an international court.

A UN fact-finding mission has called for Myanmar's top brass to be investigated for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes over a brutal crackdown against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state that forced more than 720,000 of the beleaguered minority to flee the country to Bangladesh.

Peoples deluge in Siliguri to protect Democracy

India: HC allows CBI to file closure report in missing JNU student's case

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Monday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a closure report in the case of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing from the university nearly two years ago.

A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel "declined" the plea of the missing student's mother, Fatima Nafees, to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and monitor the probe, thereby removing the CBI from the investigation.

Plea in SC seeks review of Sabarimala judgement

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking review of the Constitution bench judgement which lifted the ban on entry of women into the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala.

The plea, filed by Shylaja Vijayan, president of National Ayyappa Devotees Association, said the September 28 judgment which had allowed entry of women of all ages in the hill-top shrine is "absolutely untenable and irrational, if not perverse".

Missing Saudi journalist has not left consulate: police

ANKARA; 7 Oct 2018; AA: Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi who has been missing since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct.2, has not left the building since, police sources said on Saturday.

The Washington Post's columnist Khashoggi visited the Saudi consulate for marriage procedures, the sources who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media, said.

Washington Post: Turkish officials say Saudi writer killed

ISTANBUL; 7 Oct 2018; (AP) — Turkish investigators believe a prominent Saudi journalist who contributed to The Washington Post was killed in “a preplanned murder” at the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul, the Post reported Saturday night, citing two anonymous officials.

One Turkish official also told The Associated Press that detectives’ “initial assessment” was that Jamal Khashoggi was killed at the consulate, without elaborating. Saudi authorities early Sunday called the allegation “baseless.”

BJP MLA refused to pay toll – his supporters beat toll workers

Madhya Pradesh, Shivepuri: BJP MLA and ex-party President of the state Nandkumar Singh Chauhan refused to pay toll tax and smashed the workers for asking toll charges.

According to Punjab Kesari, Chauhan and his supporters’ cars were passing through the toll booth at Shivepuri on Agra-Mumbai national highway, when toll workers stopped their cars and requested them to pay the toll charges.

3 Palestinians killed, 376 wounded in clashes with Israeli soldiers in eastern Gaza

GAZA, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Three Palestinians were killed and 376 wounded on Friday in clashes between thousands of Palestinian protesters and Israeli soldiers in eastern Gaza Strip, close to the border with Israel, medics said.

Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesperson of Gaza Health Ministry told reporters that three Palestinians, including a child, were killed by Israeli soldiers' gunfire in eastern Gaza City.

A total of 192 of the wounded were hospitalized, including 126 shot by Israeli soldiers' live gunshots, he said.

New Zealand fines travelers who won’t unlock secure devices

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Visitors to New Zealand can be fined 5,000 New Zealand dollars ($3,243) for refusing to provide passwords to unlock electronic devices and allow customs officials to examine them under a new law that a civil liberties group on Thursday condemned as a grave invasion of privacy.

The law came into effect on Oct. 1 as part of an update of 22-year-old customs legislation. It also gives customs officials authority to copy data found on searched devices.
