China's Xinjiang region legalizes Muslim internment camps

11oct 2018; DW: Chinese authorities in the far-northwestern region of Xinjiang on Wednesday revised legislation to permit the use of "education and training centers" to combat religious extremism.

In practice, the centers are internment camps in which as many as 1 million minority Muslims have been placed in the past 12 months, according to rights groups and NGO reports.

Russia urges US to eliminate chemical weapons ahead of deadline

THE HAGUE, October 10. /TASS/. Russia is urging the United States to eliminate its chemical weapons stockpiles ahead of the established deadline, Russia’s chief delegate, Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Georgy Kalamanov told the 89th session of the OPCW Executive Council.

"We insistently call upon Washington to consider its capabilities regarding the elimination of declared chemical weapons and to follow in our footsteps to do that ahead of the declared deadline in strict accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention," he said.

Changing Golan Heights status without UN SC would defy its resolutions, says Lavrov

MOSCOW, October 10./TASS/. Changing the status of the Golan Heights in sidestepping the UN Security Council would come in direct violation of its resolutions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told journalists on Wednesday.

"The status of the Golan Heights is determined by UN Security Council resolutions," he reiterated. "I think that changing the status in bypassing the Security Council would be a direct violation of these resolutions," he added.

Moscow finds creation of US-backed administration in northeastern Syria worrisome

Iran slams U.S. unilateralism as root cause of global insecurity

TEHRAN, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said on Tuesday that the U.S. unilateralism is the root cause of growing insecurity in the world, Press TV reported.

Unilateral measures by the United States in dealing with the global issues have created great problems and challenges for the international community, Larijani noted.

The Iranian speaker made the remarks in an address to the third meeting of the speakers of the Eurasian countries' parliaments in Turkey's Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya.

US student detained in Israel for alleged boycott support

JERUSALEM; 9 Oct 2018; (AP) — In a first-of-its-kind case, Israel has held an American graduate student at its international airport for a whole week, accusing her of supporting a Palestinian-led boycott movement against the Jewish state.

Lara Alqasem, a 22-year-old American citizen with Palestinian grandparents, landed at Ben-Gurion Airport last Tuesday with a valid student visa.
