Gigantic legal luminary lost: Bar Council of India on Ram Jethmalani

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI) The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Sunday condoled the demise of eminent jurist and former Union minister Ram Jethmalani, saying a doyen of the legal fraternity has been lost.

Chairman of the apex body of lawyers and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra said Jethmalani was a gigantic legal luminary.

"Today, we have lost the legend, the doyen of the legal fraternity. Ram Jethmalani was a gigantic legal luminary. He was a revered and respected figure both by the Bar and the Bench due to his vast knowledge.

India to raise target for restoring degraded land: PM

New Delhi, Sept 9 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced that India would raise its target for restoring degraded land from 21 million hectares to 26 million hectares by 2030.

Speaking at the 14th session of the Conference of Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Modi said between 2015 and 2017, India's tree and forest cover increased by 0.8 million hectares.

India: Centre will not touch Article 371: Amit Shah

Guwahati, Sept 8 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday asserted that the Centre will not touch Article 371 which grants special provisions to the North East.

Article 370 was clearly temporary in nature but Article 371 is about special provisions in the North East and there is a vast difference between the two, Shah said while addressing the 68th plenary session of the North East Council here.

Indian Govt mum after 'ruining economy': Priyanka Gandhi

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday said the Modi government is mum after "ruining the economy" and alleged that it is trying to hide the grim situation in the country.

Her attack came as the Modi government completed 100 days in office in its second term.

"The government is mum after ruining the economy. The companies are in danger, while trade is in doldrums," Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

India: FinMin sets up task force to identify infra projects for Rs 100 lakh cr investment

New Delhi, Sep 7 (PTI) The government on Saturday said it has constituted a high-level task force to identify infrastructure projects for Rs 100 lakh crore investment by 2024-25 as India aims to become a USD 5 trillion economy.

The task force, headed by the economic affairs secretary, will draw up a 'National Infrastructure Pipeline' of Rs 100 lakh crore, the finance ministry said in a statement.

This would include greenfield and brownfield projects costing above Rs 100 crore each.

New Delhi, Sep 7 (PTI) States will have to become key agents of growth to help achieve India's target of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy, Niti Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant said on Saturday.

Speaking at an event organised here by industry chamber PHDCCI, Kant said states have to work together and learn from each other to radically transform India.
