UNITED NATIONS, Oct 07 (APP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Munir Akram Friday expressed satisfaction over the adoption by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) of the resolution expressing solidarity with the flood-hit Pakistani government and people, saying it reflected the “wide support” the country enjoys in the international community.

The resolution was sponsored by 159 countries out of the 193 members of the Assembly.

USA: NYC mayor declares state of emergency amid migrant busing crisis

NEW YORK, Oct 7 (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency on Friday in response to the thousands of Latin American migrants bused to the city in recent months from the U.S. southern border, straining the city's homeless shelter system.

The city expects to spend $1 billion to manage the influx of asylum seekers, Adams said in a speech at City Hall. More than 17,000 have come to New York since April; an average of five or six buses have arrived each day since early September, with nine buses pulling into the city on Thursday, said Adams, a Democrat.

Biden: Nuclear ‘Armageddon’ risk highest since ’62 crisis

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden is declaring that the risk of nuclear “Armageddon” is at the highest level since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, as Russian officials speak of using tactical nuclear weapons after suffering massive setbacks in the eight-month invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser, Biden said Thursday night that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “a guy I know fairly well” and the Russian leader is “not joking when he talks about the use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons.”

New York Times sacks Gaza journalist for expressing support for Palestinian resistance

UN peacekeeping chief to visit Pakistan, 4 other Asian nations

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 06 (APP): The head of UN Peacekeeping Department, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, leaves Wednesday on a 10-day tour of four Asian countries, including Pakistan, a UN spokesman said Tuesday.

“The purpose of Mr Lacroix’s visit is to thank the countries for their contributions and support to UN peacekeeping, as well as to update on progress enhancing the effectiveness of peacekeeping, including through the (UN) Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping+ initiative (A4P),” Spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the regular noon briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

USA: Federal judge halts key parts of New York’s new gun law

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A federal judge halted key provisions Thursday of New York’s latest attempt to restrict who can carry a handgun in public and where firearms can be brought, saying multiple parts of a law the state passed this year are unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Glenn Suddaby focused on multiple parts of the law, saying licensing requirements — like a rule requiring applicants to turn over information about their social media accounts — went too far.

USA: Rochester reaches $12M settlement for Daniel Prude’s kids

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — City officials agreed to pay $12 million to the children of Daniel Prude, a Black man who died after police held him down until he stopped breathing after encountering him running naked through the snowy streets of Rochester, New York.

A federal judge approved the settlement in a court document filed Thursday. Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans said in a statement that the agreement was “the best decision” for the city.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 05 (APP): Pakistan, speaking for the Group of 77 (developing countries) and China, has called for steps to avert all forms of gender-based violence, in particular femicide, and to ensure that women are not subject to multiple or aggravated forms of discrimination.

Addressing the UN General Assembly on ‘Advancement of Women” on Tuesday, Ambassador Aamir Khan, deputy permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said that violence against women and girls continues to be a major obstacle to achieving gender equality and their empowerment.

USA: Amazon suspends at least 50 workers after fire protest

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon has suspended at least 50 warehouse employees who refused to work their shifts following a trash compactor fire at one of its New York facilities, according to union organizers.

The company suspended the workers, with pay, on Tuesday, a day after the fire disrupted operations at the Staten Island warehouse that voted to unionize earlier this year.
