US to announce new $625 mln military aid package for Ukraine — reports

NEW YORK, October 4. /TASS/: The United States is set to announce on Tuesday a new $625 million military aid package for Ukraine that will include four HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, the Associated Press news agency reported, citing US officials.

The Pentagon will send its rocket systems to Kiev for the first time since July to increase the number of supplied HIMARS to 20. The US will also supply ammunition and equipment necessary for the Ukrainian troops as part of the new aid package, the news agency reported.

UN chief urges all countries headed to COP27 to prioritize climate action

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on all countries to make climate action the global priority.

The UN chief told journalists at the UN headquarters in New York that all countries, led by the G20, can demonstrate that "climate action truly is the top global priority" as government representatives begin finalizing the agenda for the COP27 (the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) next month.

COP27 will take place in Sharm al-Sheikh, Egypt, from Nov. 6-18.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Security Council fails to adopt resolution “condemning” referendums in 4 Ukrainian regions

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 1 (NNN-Xinhua) — United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution, which “condemns” the referendums held in four Ukrainian regions under Russian control from Sept 23 to 27.

The draft resolution titled “Illegal So-Called Referenda in Ukraine,” prepared by Albania and the United States, was vetoed by Russia, one of the five permanent members of the council.

Of the 15-nation council, 10 nations, including the United States, France and Britain, voted in favor of the draft, while China, Gabon, India and Brazil abstained from voting.

Nord Stream rupture may mark biggest single methane release ever recorded, U.N. says

Sept 30 (Reuters) - The ruptures on the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline system under the Baltic Sea have led to what is likely the biggest single release of climate-damaging methane ever recorded, the United Nations Environment Programme said on Friday.

A huge plume of highly concentrated methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent but shorter-lived than carbon dioxide, was detected in an analysis this week of satellite imagery by researchers associated with UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory, or IMEO, the organization said.

USA: Methane blast in Baltic Sea highlights global problem

NEW YORK (AP) — Scientists have been measuring the scale of the massive methane leak from damaged pipelines in the Baltic Sea, with the latest figures equating the levels of gas escaping to the annual emissions of some whole countries. It is believed to be the single biggest recorded gas leak over a short period of time.

But as serious as the methane escaping from ruptured pipelines may be, there are alarming incidents of massive methane releases around the world frequently.
