Over 200,000 coronavirus cases registered in Russia, though spreading speed is down

MOSCOW, May 10. /TASS/: The number of coronavirus patients in Russia has exceeded 200,000, with another 75,000 confirmed cases in the past week. However, the growth rates of the number of infected continue going down averaging 6.5% per day in the past seven days.

On Sunday, the federal anti-coronavirus crisis center reported 11,012 new cases. All in all, the number of coronavirus cases increased by 75,001 in the country to 209,688 in the period from May 4 to 10.

Russia may have reached coronavirus plateau - WHO representative

MOSCOW, May 10. / TASS /: The growth rate of cases of coronavirus infection in recent days suggests that Russia has reached a plateau, the spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Russia Melita Vujnovic said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg on Sunday.

"Cases of infection continue to be appear, but their growth has stabilized," Vujnovic said. "We hope that what we have been seeing for the last few days is a plateau."

Fire at hospice near Moscow caused by faulty wiring, investigators say

MOSCOW, May 11. /TASS/: The fire at a hospice for elderly people in Krasnogorsk, outside Moscow, which killed ten, had been caused by faulty wiring, the Investigative Committee’s Main Investigation Department in the Moscow Region told TASS.

"According to preliminary data, the fire was caused by faulty wiring," the investigators said.

The hospice was located in a private house. The investigators launched a criminal investigation into providing services, which fail to meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of two or more people by negligence.

Russia accuses U.S. of downplaying Soviet Union's role in World War II

MOSCOW, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Russia has accused the United States of distorting the history of the World War II and downplaying the Soviet Union's role in defeating Nazi Germany.

"We are extremely indignant at the attempt to distort the results of the defeat of Nazism and the decisive contribution of our country," Russian Foreign Ministry said Sunday in a statement.

The ministry said it could not ignore the comment posted by the White House on social media, which only mentioned the United States and Britain as victors over the Nazis.

Russian Billionaire Bosov commits suicide

MOSCOW, May 6. /TASS/: Russian billionaire Dmitry Bosov, the co-owner of Vostokugol and Sibanthracite coal companies, committed a suicide at the age of 52, RBC reported. A source familiar with Bosov confirmed the information to TASS.

According to RBC, Bosov committed the suicide on the night of May 6.

Investigators are currently ascertaining the circumstances of the billionaire’s suicide, a source in law enforcement agencies told TASS.

In 2020, Bosov ranked 86th among the richest Russians with the wealth of $1.1 bln, the Forbes magazine said earlier.

 

Coronavirus cases in Russia grow by 10,817 over past day

MOSCOW, May 9. /TASS/: New coronavirus cases in Russia have grown by 10,817 over the past twenty-four hours to 198,676 in all the country’s regions, the anti-coronavirus crisis center reported on Saturday.

To date, 31,916 people have recovered from the illness while fatalities have reached 1,827, the crisis center said.

According to the data, the daily growth in coronavirus cases amounted to 5.8%, the lowest figure since the start of the pandemic.

A total of 4,399 new cases (40.7%) were identified as asymptomatic, the anti-coronavirus crisis center said.

No rise in domestic violence in Russia, says Interior Ministry

MOSCOW, May 10./TASS/: No rise in domestic violence is reported across Russia, the press service of the Interior Ministry said on Sunday in reply to an inquiry from TASS.

"According to statistics data, no rise is seen in the household crimes," the press service said.

The ministry specifies that in the first quarter of this year, the figure of domestic abuse incidents has declined by 13%, while their share in all crimes committed across Russia is 1.4%.

 

About 12,000 lieutenants from Defense Ministry’s 36 academies to join Russian army

MOSCOW, May 10. /TASS/: On the day of the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War 36 military academies across the nation held graduation ceremonies, the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding that 12,000 newly-commissioned lieutenants would join the armed forces.

Among the new-comers to the Russian officers’ corps there are 260 women. According to the Defense Ministry, one in five former cadets graduated with honors.
