UN session on high seas biodiversity ends without agreement

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — UN member states ended two weeks of negotiations without a treaty to protect biodiversity in the high seas, an agreement that would have addressed growing environmental and economic challenges.

“Although we did make excellent progress we still do need a little bit more time to progress towards the finish line,” said conference chair Rena Lee, adding that a plenary session had nonetheless approved resumption of the
negotiations at a future unspecified date.

2 plead guilty in scheme to sell Biden’s daughter’s diary

NEW YORK (AP) — Two Florida residents have pleaded guilty in a scheme to peddle a diary and other items belonging to President Joe Biden’s daughter to the conservative group Project Veritas for $40,000, prosecutors said Thursday.

Aimee Harris and Robert Kurlander pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Damian Williams’ office said.

UN boosting support to Pakistan fighting floods in parts of country; $7 mln mobilized

ICC prosecutor demands action over Sudan war crimes

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor expressed frustration over the lack of accountability for crimes committed during the Darfur conflict, telling the UN Security Council that survivors in Sudan need “action, not words.”

Karim Khan addressed the council by video during a visit to Sudan, describing trips to Darfur, where the UN says 300,000 people were killed and two and a half million fled their homes during the conflict that began in 2003.

UN chief calls for new global consensus on cooperation to ensure collective security
