UNITED NATIONS, Aug 19 (APP): The United Nations is set to study reports about India’s attempts at rigging the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Secretary-General’s Deputy spokesman said, while emphasizing that all communities should be “fairly” treated and represented.

Responding to a question at the daily news briefing in New York about permitting temporary residents in the Muslim-majority Indian occupied Kashmir to register as voters, Spokesman Farhan Aziz Haq said the matter would “need to be studied.”

UN chief Guterres speaks for demilitarization of Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine

UN, August 19. /TASS/: The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (NPP) in Ukraine, needs to be demilitarized, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Friday.

"First of all, what is true is that if it is demilitarized as we propose, the plant, the problem will be solved," the UN chief’s press office quoted him as saying to journalists upon a visit to the city of Odessa.

"Obviously, the electricity from Zaporozhye [NPP] is Ukrainian electricity, and it's necessary, especially during the winter for the Ukrainian people, and this principle must be fully respected," he added.

USA: Stocks fall broadly, S&P 500 set to break winning streak

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell in afternoon trading on Wall Street Friday, putting major indexes on track for losses that will end a solid run of weekly gains.

The S&P 500 fell 1.1% as of 1:16 p.m. Eastern. The benchmark index is now on track to break a four-week winning streak. The Nasdaq fell 1.9% and is also set to end four weeks of gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 202 points, or 0.6%, to 33,796 and is slightly in the red for the week.

77 Killed In Yemen Floods Affecting 200,000 People: UN

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Local authorities in Yemen reported 77 people killed, including children, in flooding, from mid-Jul to mid-Aug, that affected more than 200,000 people, UN humanitarians said yesterday.

Heavy rainfall triggered flooding across 16 of the 20 governorates in the country, particularly impacting sites of displaced people, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

World’s first malaria vaccine to benefit millions of children: UNICEF

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 17 (NNN-Xinhua) — British pharmaceutical company GSK has been awarded a contract to produce the world’s first malaria vaccine so that millions more children will be protected against the killer disease, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced.

The landmark award, valued at up to 170 million U.S. dollars, will lead to 18 million doses of the RTS,S vaccine available over the next three years, potentially saving thousands of young lives annually.

U.N. chief to meet Zelenskiy, Erdogan in Ukraine on Thursday

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 16 (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Ukraine on Thursday, a U.N. spokesman said, and on Friday visit the Black Sea port of Odesa, where grain exports have resumed under a U.N.-brokered deal.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday that Guterres would meet Zelenskiy in Lviv in western Ukraine and discuss the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, along with finding a political solution to the conflict with Russia.
