NEW YORK, July 19. /TASS/: A team of US academic researchers from the Mississippi State University tracked signals of mobile phones in Russia last year under the US Army-funded project, including in the area of the Russian Navy’s test range in Nyonoksa, Wall Street Journal reported in its electronic version on Saturday.

Global COVID-19 deaths surpass 600,000: Johns Hopkins University

NEW YORK, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Global COVID-19 deaths surpassed 600,000 on Saturday, reaching 600,435 as of 7:34 p.m. local time (2334 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the total COVID-19 cases around the world rose to 14,210,040, according to the CSSE.

The global death toll briefly topped 600,000 Friday night local time on the CSSE tally, but was then fixed to below the mark earlier Saturday. 

‘Black Lives’ mural outside Trump Tower defaced for 3rd time

NEW YORK (AP) — A “Black Lives Matter” mural painted on the street in front of President Donald Trump’s namesake New York City tower has quickly become a target for vandalism, defaced with bucketfuls of paint three times in less than a week.

In the latest incident, two women were arrested around 3 p.m. Saturday after police said they poured black paint on the block-long mural outside Trump Tower on Manhattan’s chic Fifth Avenue.

USA: Personal assistant charged in dismembered tech CEO’s killing

NEW YORK (AP) — A personal assistant arrested Friday in the death and dismemberment of a 33-year-old tech entrepreneur was believed to have owed his boss a “significant amount of money,” New York City police said.

Tyrese Haspil faces a murder charge in the death of Fahim Saleh, whose beheaded, armless body was found Tuesday by a cousin who had gone to his luxury Manhattan condo to check on him.

Haspil, 21, handled finances and personal matters for Saleh, whose ventures included a ride-hailing service in Africa.

UN issues $10.3 billion coronavirus appeal and warns of price of inaction

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 17 (APP): The United Nations Friday called on wealthy countries to “step up now or pay the price later”, warning that the coronavirus crisis will “wreak havoc” in developing countries.

Mark Lowcock, UN under-secretary for humanitarian affairs, made that call, as he released an updated $10.3 billion appeal to fight pandemic that has hit 63 low-income countries.

“The pandemic and associated global recession are about to wreak havoc in fragile and low-income countries”, he said during press briefing.

New York Governor blames federal government's "incompetence" for COVID-19 spread in New York

NEW YORK, July 16 (Xinhua) -- New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that the federal government's "incompetence" in managing the COVID-19 crisis failed New York, which became the first epicenter of the outbreak in the United States in March.

The governor made the remarks while commenting on a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which pointed out that by the time the travel restrictions on Europe were implemented by the federal government, importation and community transmission of COVID-19 had already occurred in New York.

U.S. breaks record with over 77,000 cases of COVID-19 in one day: Johns Hopkins

NEW YORK, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The United States reported a record high of more than 77,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 3,560,364, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the death toll rose by 974, taking the country's total to 138,201.

The state of Florida, which has emerged as the epicenter of the outbreak, reported a record 156 COVID-19 deaths on Thursday with close to 14,000 new cases.

UN warns of ‘catastrophe’ if Yemen oil tanker ruptures

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 16 (APP): The United Nations environment chief has warned that an aging oil tanker moored off Yemen’s Red Sea coast with 1.1 million barrels of crude on board risked the possibility of a rupture, causing an environmental “catastrophe” if its experts cannot immediately attend to the decaying vessel.
