USA Lawyers: Trump might claim harassment in tax return quest

NEW YORK (AP) — A week after losing a Supreme Court ruling, President Donald Trump’s lawyers said Wednesday they’re considering challenging a subpoena for his tax records by criminal prosecutors on grounds that it’s a fishing expedition or a form of harassment or retaliation against him.

The plans were outlined in a letter to a Manhattan federal judge overseeing legal squabbles related to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.’s request to Trump’s longtime accountant for eight years of the president’s personal and corporate tax records in a criminal probe.

UN chief urges ‘bold’ solutions to world’s challenges amid coronavirus pandemic

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 15 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for “concrete, bold and implementable solutions” to turn the tide on the many challenges the world is facing, including the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our world is in turmoil,” he said at the start of the ministerial segment of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF), the UN’s central body for follow-up of the 2030 Agenda for the anti-poverty Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in September 2015, while acknowledging that the planet was not on track to deliver those goals.

UN preparing team to visit derelict oil tanker off Yemen

UNITED NATIONS, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations is preparing a team to assess a neglected tanker off Yemen to avoid a possible catastrophic spill of 1.1 million barrels of crude oil, a UN spokesman said on Monday.

"The local de facto authorities in Yemen have officially communicated to the UN their approval for an UN-led technical assessment and repair mission onboard the Safer oil tanker off the coast of Ras Issa," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Global COVID-19 cases top 13 mln: Johns Hopkins University

NEW YORK, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Global confirmed COVID-19 cases topped 13 million on Monday, reaching 13,006,764 as of 4:34 p.m. local time (2034 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

A total of 570,776 people worldwide have died from the disease, the data showed.

The United States suffered the most from the pandemic, with 3,346,246 cases and 135,477 fatalities; Brazil followed with 1,864,681 cases and 72,100 deaths, the tally showed.

USA Prosecutors: Epstein victim to speak at associate’s hearing

NEW YORK (AP) — One or more victims of Jeffrey Epstein will tell a judge Tuesday that his ex-girlfriend should be denied bail on charges that she recruited teenage girls for him to sexually abuse in the 1990s, prosecutors said Monday.

Prosecutors made the revelation in court papers as they argued there is no reason to free British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell on bail.

They also revealed new details about Maxwell’s July 2 arrest at a $1 million New Hampshire estate she purchased in December, saying FBI agents had to bust into her residence after she failed to cooperate.
