UN Security Council adopts resolution on mandate renewal for cross-border humanitarian mechanism in Syria

UNITED NATIONS, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Saturday adopted a resolution, with 12 votes in favor and three abstentions, on the mandate renewal for the cross-border humanitarian mechanism in Syria.

Resolution 2533 decides to renew the border crossing of Bab al-Hawa for 12 months, until July 10, 2021. China, Russia and the Dominican Republic voted in abstention. Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, made remarks in explanation of China's vote.

Saudi prince a prime suspect in Khashoggi murder case: UN

12 July 2020; MEMO: A UN official has said that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) was a prime suspect in the case of the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul in 2018, reports Anadolu Agency.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency, the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Execution Agnes Callamard said even though she does not have evidence against the MBS, but in terms of ordering and inciting the killing, he is a prime suspect.

UN Security Council once again rejects Russia’s resolution on trans-border aid to Syria

UNITED NATIONS, July 11. /TASS/: The UN Security Council once again voted to reject the Russian draft resolution on international aid deliveries to Syria via one checkpoint on the border with Turkey, said Christoph Heusgen, Germany’s envoy to the UN who chairs the Council in July.

The draft resolution received seven ‘no’ votes and four ‘yes’ votes, with four abstentions.

US jury finds Russian cybercrime suspect Nikulin guilty on all counts

NEW YORK, July 11. /TASS/: The jury at the US District Court for the Northern District of California found Russian citizen Yevgeny Nikulin gulty on nine counts of cybercrime, according to a live broadcast of the court session via Zoom.

The judge said it was a unanimous decision and read out the verdict.

According to the verdict, the jury disagreed with the prosecutors’ reasons and cleared Nikulin of two sections of two counts. However, the Russian citizen was still found guilty on those counts.

It took the jury several hours to pass the decision.

USA: Ghislaine Maxwell seeks bail, citing coronavirus, and denies Jeffrey Epstein charges

UN fails for 2nd time to agree on Syria aid from Turkey

United Nations, Jul 11 (AP) A divided UN Security Council failed for a second time Friday to agree on extending humanitarian aid deliveries to Syria's mainly rebel-held northwest from Turkey as the current UN mandate was ending, leaving nearly 3 million people at risk of losing aid.

Russia and China vetoed a UN resolution backed by the 13 other council members that would have maintained two crossing points from Turkey for six months.

Civilians endured “unfathomable suffering” when the Syrian military launched a campaign late last year to retake the area, according to a report.

They were subjected to indiscriminate air strikes and ground shelling, as well as arrests, torture and pillaging.

Hundreds of civilians were killed before a ceasefire was agreed in March.

USA: Ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen back in federal prison

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, was returned to federal prison Thursday, after balking at certain conditions of the home confinement he was granted because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Records obtained by The Associated Press said Cohen was ordered into custody after he “failed to agree to the terms of Federal Location Monitoring” in Manhattan.

New UN study predicts consistent annual increases in global temperature

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 09 (APP): The annual mean global temperature is likely to be at least 1.8° Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900) in each of the coming five years (2020-2024) and there is a 20% chance that it will exceed 2.7°F in at least one year, according to a new climate prediction issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a United Nations’ specialized agency.
