US stocks cap milestone-setting week with modest losses

New York (AP) — Bond yields rose and stocks mostly bounced back from an early slide to finish with modest losses Friday, a downbeat end on Wall Street to an otherwise milestone-setting week for the broader market.

The small decline snapped a six-day winning streak for the S&P 500, though the benchmark index still notched a weekly gain. The S&P 500 set three straight all-time highs earlier in the week, extending the market’s solid gains in June into July. The S&P is up 19.3% so far this year.

Immigrants fired from Trump clubs seek White House meeting

NEW YORK (AP) — A group of immigrant workers fired from President Donald Trump’s golf clubs say they want to meet with him at the White House to make the case that they should not be deported.

The 21 maids, groundskeepers and other workers fired earlier this year from five of Trump’s clubs asked their former employer in a letter this week to remember all their hard work and give them a chance to make their case in person why they should stay in the country.

Millions in Indian state of Assam dealing with ‘xenophobic climate’: UN experts

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 04 (APP): Millions of people from minority backgrounds in the Indian state of Assam are living in a “xenophobic climate”, and face marginalization and a rise in hate speech on social media, UN experts have warned.

The concerns raised by the group of UN Special Rapporteurs are linked to draft amendments to the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) list, which excludes more than 4 million people, in particular Muslims and Hindus of Bengali descent.

UN Security Council calls for peaceful presidential election in Guinea-Bissau

UNITED NATIONS, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Wednesday reiterated the importance of a credible, free, fair and peaceful presidential election to be held in Guinea-Bissau on Nov. 24.

The Security Council called upon leaders of all political parties in Guinea-Bissau to continue to refrain from incitement of followers towards any violent action.

U.S. Toy Association "relieved" at suspension of new tariffs on Chinese imports

NEW YORK, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Toy Association was "relieved" at Washington's decision to halt additional new tariffs on Chinese imports, the association said Monday.

"It is our hope that renewed negotiations will produce meaningful progress, while we remain adamant that tariffs on children's toys is the wrong approach and should never come to pass," said Steve Pasierb, president and chief executive of the association, in a statement.

In a story published by the Financial Times newspaper , Putin said “the liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population.” John said in a statement released Friday that he disagrees with Putin’s “view that pursuing policies that embrace multicultural and sexual diversity are obsolete in our societies.”
