U.S. children victimized by rampant gun violence: Newsweek

NEW YORK, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Guns are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States, and simply being exposed to gun violence at an early age causes significant harm to children's mental health, reported Newsweek on Thursday.

Around 9 million children per year were exposed to gun violence prior to the pandemic and Black children had a 4.44 times higher exposure rate than white children. This disparity has only gotten worse, according to the report.

NEW YORK, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of people across the United States exposed to extreme smoke days has grown 27 times in the past decade, as exposure to even-more-extreme smoke events has risen 11,000 fold, said an opinion piece published by The New York Times on Wednesday.

Attorneys Steven A. Schwartz and Peter LoDuca are facing possible punishment over a filing in a lawsuit against an airline that included references to past court cases that Schwartz thought were real, but were actually invented by the artificial intelligence-powered chatbot.

Pakistan wins a seat on UN Economic & Social Council as UNGA votes for new members

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 08 (APP): Pakistan was on Thursday elected to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the economic arm of the United Nations, for a three-year term, beginning January 1, 2024, with Ambassador Munir Akram saying that the success was a recognition of “our positive role in international diplomacy”.

In balloting in the 193-member General Assembly, Pakistan received 129 votes.

Pakistan was contesting one of three Asian seats – also being contested by Iraq, Japan, Nepal and Tajikistan.

A two-third majority – 124 votes – was required for election.

EU member Slovenia overwhelmingly defeats Moscow ally Belarus for a seat on the UN Security Council

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — In an election reflecting opposition to Russia’s war against Ukraine, European Union member Slovenia overwhelmingly defeated Moscow’s close ally Belarus on Tuesday for a seat on the U.N. Security Council starting in January.

The race between the two members of the U.N.’s East European group was the only contested election for five seats on the U.N.’s most powerful body, and was closely watched because of the two countries’ opposing views on Russia’s Feb. 24, 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
