India: Being between 'devil and deep sea': Chidambaram on states' situation after govt's excise cut on fuel

New Delhi, May 22 (PTI) Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday wondered whether the states can afford to give up revenue from VAT on petrol and diesel unless the Centre devolves more funds or gives them more grants, likening their situation to being between the devil and the deep sea .

The former finance minister's remarks come a day after the government announced Rs 8 per litre cut in excise duty on petrol and Rs 6 reduction on diesel.

India’s Revived Domestic Airline Jet Airways Gets Regulatory Nod To Resume Operations

MUMBAI, May 21 (NNN-PTI) – India’s domestic airline, Jet Airways, will resume its operations after receiving its revalidated Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the country’s aviation regulator, the airline said in a press release yesterday.

The airline was revived by the Jalan Kalrock Consortium, under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, as per the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved resolution plan.

Mathura (UP), May 21 (PTI) A fast-track court here has fixed July 20 as the next date of hearing in a suit related to the shifting of the Shahi Masjid Idgah from the land of the Katra Keshav Dev temple filed by petitioner Gopal Baba, a disciple of Naga Baba, last year, the petitioner's counsel said.

"Owing to a no-work call given by the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh on Friday, the matter was posted for hearing on July 20," Deepak Sharma, the counsel for the petitioner, said.

Indian Pegasus row: SC extends time for submitting probe report on use of Israeli spyware

New Delhi, May 20 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday extended the time for submitting the report by the apex court-appointed technical and supervisory committees to look into the Pegasus row, saying 29 infected mobile phones are being examined for the spyware and the process should be over in four weeks.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said the technical committee has been examining mobiles for the spyware and has also recorded statements of persons including some journalists.

Indian Forex reserves down by USD 2.676

Mumbai, May 20 (PTI) The country's foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 2.676 billion to stand at USD 593.279 billion in the week ended May 13, RBI data showed on Friday.

In the previous week, the reserves had declined by USD 1.774 billion to USD 595.954 billion.

According to an article 'State of the Economy', published in the RBI's Bulletin for May, foreign exchange reserves at USD 596 billion as on May 6 were equivalent to about 10 months of imports projected for 2022-23.

AstroSat witnesses black hole birth for 500th time

Pune, May 20 (PTI) AstroSat, India's first dedicated astronomy mission which is into space since 2015, has detected the birth of a black hole for the 500th time, Pune-based research institution IUCAA has said, a development scientists termed as a remarkable achievement .

Black holes are objects with a gravitational pull so strong that not even light can escape. They are the subjects of intense scrutiny from astronomers from all over the world. Scientists across the world are studying their formation.

India: CBI officials misbehaved with ex Bihar CM Rabri Devi

Patna, May 20 (PTI) Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar on Friday accused CBI officials of misbehaviour and using unparliamentary language while interrogating Rabri Devi, a former chief minister and the wife of the party's national president Lalu Prasad.

A CBI team had early in the morning raided the 10, Circular Road residence of Rabri Devi who has been named as accused in a fresh corruption case lodged by the investigating agency.

India: BJP govt unable to control crime in UP: Akhilesh

Lucknow, May 20 (PTI) Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday accused the ruling BJP of failing to control crime in Uttar Pradesh.

Yadav claimed that crimes against children have attained new records under the BJP rule.

In a statement issued from the SP headquarters, Yadav claimed that from January 1 to April 30, 82 children, including 35 boys and 47 girls, have gone missing from four districts of the state.

The former chief minister said 28 children are missing in Kushinagar, 23 in Deoria, 16 in Gorakhpur, and 15 in Maharajganj.

1 found dead, 9 missing after tunnel collapses in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Rescuers have found the body of one worker in Indian-controlled Kashmir after part of a tunnel collapsed in the Himalayan region and are continuing to search for nine others who are trapped, officials said Friday.

The tunnel is part of a mountainous highway tunnel system that was under construction when it collapsed Thursday night in the southern Ramban district.
