India: Bihar court decides 108-year-old land dispute

Patna, May 19 (PTI) A court in Bhojpur district of Bihar is in news for having disposed of a civil dispute, over a piece of land measuring three acres, 108 years after it was filed.

It has been a while since Additional District and Sessions Judge Shweta Singh decided the case in favour of Atul Singh, ending the legal battle which began with his great-grandfather Darbari Singh in 1914.

India: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan released from prison

Sitapur (UP), May 20 (PTI) Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan walked out of the Sitapur Jail in Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning, a day after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in a cheating case.

Khan's son and MLA Abdullah Azam, Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya) leader Shivpal Singh Yadav and a large number of supporters welcomed the senior SP leader upon his release after 27 months.

India: RBI to pay Rs 30,307 crore dividend to govt for FY22

Mumbai, May 20 (PTI) Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday said its board has approved a dividend payment of Rs 30,307 crore to the government for the financial ended March 2022.

The board approved the transfer of Rs 30,307 crore as surplus to the central government for the accounting year 2021-22 while deciding to maintain the Contingency Risk Buffer at 5.50 per cent, RBI said in a statement.

The decision on the dividend payment was made in the 596th meeting of the Central Board of Directors of RBI, headed by Governor Shaktikanta Das, held on Friday.

India: Old man held for killing his son and daughter-in-law in Kanpur

Kanpur:  A 70-year-old man has been arrested for brutally killing his son and daughter-in-law at their house in Ram Bagh area here.

The newly married couple were found dead in their house under the Bajaria police circle, with their throats allegedly slit open on Thursday.

The Joint Commissioner of Police, Anand Prakash Tiwari said one Shivam Tiwari, 27, lived with his wife Julie, 25, and his family in the building where the murders took place.

The couple had got married at a mass marriage event organised a few months ago.

Pakistan cuts export target for its famed mangoes as heat hits output

India: SC grants interim bail to SP leader Azam Khan

New Delhi, May 19 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday granted interim bail to jailed Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in a cheating case, saying it is a fit case to invoke its extraordinary power under Article 142 of the Constitution to grant relief.

A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao also directed Khan to file for regular bail within two weeks and asked the trial court to decide it on merits without being influenced by any of the observations of the top court.

India: Mandi Gyanvapi mosque survey report submitted to Varanasi court

Varanasi (UP), May 19 (PTI) A commission appointed by a court here to conduct a survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque-Shringar Gauri complex filed its report on Thursday, submitting documents, videos and photographs.

Special Advocate Commissioner Vishal Singh said he has submitted the report on the survey conducted on May 14, 15 and 16.

"I do not have the right to tell what is in the survey report. Now the court will take further action on it," he told the media outside the court.

India: SP MP asks Oppn to counter BJP's mosque Shivling 'propaganda'

Sambhal (UP), May 19 (PTI) Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rehman Barq on Thursday said the claimed discovery of a Shivling in Varanasi's Gyanvapi mosque complex was false propaganda and urged opposition parties to counter it.

The local MP said Hindus and Muslims should ensure that such propaganda is stopped as every mosque is now being seen with suspicion.

India, world's biggest buyer of Russian arms, looks to diversify suppliers

NEW DELHI, May 18 (Reuters) - India is looking to domestic firms and eastern European nations for military gear and ammunition, as the world's biggest buyer of Russian arms seeks alternative suppliers at a time when Moscow is fighting a war with Ukraine and facing sanctions.

New Delhi has long talked of diversifying the suppliers to its huge armed forces, and even making more equipment at home, objectives that have taken on new urgency since Russia's invasion, two government officials and a defence source said.
