India: Promise of actual gold makes bride accept nuptials

Kanpur: Ornaments gifted to a bride almost broke up the marriage here. The incident took place at Birhar village in the Saadh police area of Ghatampur town.

Applying her mind the bride tried to test the purity of the ornaments gifted to her by the groom's family and sensed something was wrong with them.

Communicating to one of her father's friends, who happened to be a jeweller, asked him to closely test the purity of the costly items.

Carefully surveying the golden jewellery, the jeweller found that the doubts of the bride proved to be true.

India: Distt administration takes steps to end jam in Kanpur

Kanpur: To make the city areas jam-free, the district administration has decided to take up a big decision.

There will be a complete ban on the operation of e-rickshaws on VIP Road, GT Road and Naubasta Highway.

This decision was taken in a meeting held on Saturday with police, traffic, transport and administrative officials.

Now e-rickshaw will not operate from IIT to Ramadevi, from Phool Bagh to Nawabganj intersection.

India Records 2,226 New COVID-19 Cases, 65 More Deaths

NEW DELHI, May 22 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 43,136,371 today, as 2,226 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Besides, 65 deaths were reported from the pandemic across the country since yesterday morning, taking the total death toll to 524,413.

There are still 14,955 active COVID-19 cases in the country, with a fall of 41 active cases during the past 24 hours.

India: 'Copying takes place where examinations are held'

Kanpur: "Where there is an examination, the copying is certain to happen," said an examiner turned to attend the last paper at an old college here on Sunday .

Delhi court convicts O P Chautala in disproportionate assets case

New Delhi, May 21 (PTI) A Delhi court on Saturday convicted former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala in a case related to disproportionate assets.

Special judge Vikas Dhull passed the order and posted the matter for May 26, when the court will hear the arguments on the quantum of sentence.

The CBI had lodged the case in 2005, and a charge sheet was filed in March 26, 2010, accusing Chautala of amassing assets worth Rs 6.09 crore, much disproportionate to his legitimate income, between 1993 and 2006.

India: CNG price hiked by Rs 2 per kg; rates up by Rs 19.60/kg in two months

New Delhi, May 21 (PTI) The price of CNG in the national capital on Saturday was hiked by Rs 2 per kg, the 13th increase in rates in just over two months.

CNG in the national capital territory of Delhi now costs Rs 75.61 per kg, up from Rs 73.61 per kg, according to the information posted on the website of Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) -- the firm which retails CNG and piped cooking gas in the national capital and adjoining cities.

India: Professor arrested for emails criticizing BJP gov in Assam

Hailakandi (Assam), May 21 (PTI) An associate professor of a college in Assam's Hailakandi district was arrested Saturday for allegedly sending emails to officials criticising government policies and using unparliamentary words against the state chief minister, a police officer said.

Police had registered a suo moto case against the professor, leading to his arrest, he added.

India: Rape accused arrested in J&K's Reasi

Jammu, May 21 (PTI) A man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, a senior police officer said.

Ganesh Singh, a resident of Chourakote-Bhomag, was arrested by the special team after a series of raids, Senior superintendent of police, Reasi, Amit Gupta said.

Gupta had constituted the team following a written complaint by a man on May 5, stating that her 17-year-old daughter was allegedly raped by someone.

India: Petrol price cut by Rs 8.69, diesel by Rs 7.05

New Delhi, May 22 (PTI) Petrol price on Sunday was slashed by Rs 8.69 a litre and that of diesel by Rs 7.05 per litre following the government's decision to cut excise duty on auto fuels, giving relief to consumers battered by high fuel prices that had pushed inflation to a record high.

The government had on Saturday announced a record Rs 8 per litre cut in excise duty on petrol and Rs 6 reduction on diesel.

India: Azam Khan, Shivpal skip SP MLAs meet

Lucknow, May 22 (PTI) Azam Khan and Shivpal Yadav on Sunday skipped the Samajwadi Party MLAs meeting called by party Chief Akhilesh Yadav ahead of the assembly session.

Khan, who was recently released from Sitapur Jail, is in Rampur and could not attend the meeting due to health reasons, SP leaders said.

However, in Rampur, Khan was seen visiting the district jail with his son Abdullah Azam to meet his supporters lodged there in various cases.
