China launches new communication technology experiment satellite

XICHANG, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- China sent a new communication technology experiment satellite into planned orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province late Thursday.

The satellite, launched by a Long March-3B carrier rocket at 23:21 (Beijing Time), will be mainly used for multi-band and high-speed communication technology experiments.

U.S. urged not to set obstacles for Chinese diplomats

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday urged the U.S. side not to set obstacles for Chinese diplomats in the United States to do their normal jobs.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks in response to reports that the United States ordered Chinese diplomats to notify the State Department before meeting with local officials, claiming this is a reciprocal measure against China's practices.

China’s economic slowdown deepens, weighing on global growth

BEIJING (AP) — China’s economic growth sank to a 26-year low in the latest quarter amid pressure from a trade war with Washington, adding to a deepening slump that is weighing on global growth.

The world’s second-largest economy expanded by 6 percent in the three months ending in September, down from the previous quarter’s 6.2 percent, data showed Friday. It was the weakest growth since China started reporting data by quarters in 1993.

Postpone Non-Essential Travel To Catalonia Region, Spain – Malaysia’s FM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (NNN-Bernama) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Malaysians to postpone non-essential travel to the Catalonia region in Spain.

Wisma Putra (Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry) in a statement Wednesday said the advice was issued given the current circumstances in the area, where there have been major protests which began on Oct 13, 2019.

“Malaysians who are visiting Barcelona and the Malaysian community residing in Catalonia are advised to give utmost priority to their safety and avoid the areas of rallies and demonstrations.

Indonesia, S.Korea conclude talks on bilateral trade deal

JAKARTA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia and South Korea announced here on Wednesday the conclusion of talks on a bilateral trade deal between the two countries.

It was announced by Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita and his South Korean counterpart Yoo Myung-Hee.

Int'l community slams U.S. passage of Hong Kong-related bill

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The passage of a Hong Kong-related bill by the U.S. Congress, which was a pure interference in China's internal affairs, unveiled the political intentions of those in the U.S. government to weaken China, the international community has said.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 -- moving it a step closer to becoming a law -- which would mandate an annual review to assess whether the Chinese city has sufficient autonomy.

Opposition protests suspend Hong Kong assembly session

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam was again forced from the legislative chamber because of protests Thursday by opposition members following a bloody attack on a leader of the nearly 5-month-old protest movement.

Pro-democracy lawmakers shouted and waved placards depicting Lam with bloodied hands, prompting their removal by guards and the suspension of proceedings.

A day earlier, Lam was forced to abandon an annual policy address in the chamber, later delivering it by television.

Asian shares mixed on caution over China-US trade deal

BANGKOK (AP) — Asian shares were mixed Thursday after officials signaled work remains to be done on an agreement for a truce in the tariff war between the U.S. and China.

Hong Kong led regional gains after its chief executive, Carrie Lam, announced help for the property sector. The semi-autonomous city’s economy has been languishing amid months of increasingly violent political protests that are in part fueled by the sky-high cost of housing.

Huawei's third-quarter revenue jumps 27% as smartphone sales surge

SHENZHEN, China/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s third-quarter revenue jumped 27%, driven by a surge in shipments of smartphones launched before a trade blacklisting by the United States expected to hammer its business.

Huawei, the world’s biggest maker of telecom network equipment and the No. 2 manufacturer of smartphones, was all but banned by the United States in May from doing business with American companies, significantly disrupting its ability to source key parts.

Hong Kong tells US not to interfere after Congress OKs bills

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s government says the U.S. Congress shouldn’t interfere in the territory’s affairs, after the House passed three bills showing U.S. support for pro-democracy protesters.

A government statement Wednesday defending Hong Kong’s political system came before the territory’s leader, Carrie Lam, was to deliver an annual address laying out her policies.

She wasn’t, however, expected to yield to key demands of protesters who’ve been demonstrating since June.
