MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine national police chief resigned on Monday after he faced allegations in a Senate hearing that he intervened as a provincial police chief in 2013 to prevent his officers from being prosecuted for allegedly selling a huge quantity of illegal drugs they had seized.

China’s trade with US shrinks again in September

BEIJING (AP) — China’s trade with the United States fell by double digits again in September amid a tariff war that threatens to tip the global economy into recession.

Exports to the United States, China’s biggest foreign market, fell 17.8% to $36.5 billion, a deterioration from August’s 16% decline, customs data showed Monday. Imports of American goods sank 20.6% from the year before to $10.6 billion, a slight improvement over August’s 22% decline.

Japan looks for missing after typhoon, warns of mudslides

TOKYO (AP) — Rescue crews in Japan dug through mudslides and searched near swollen rivers Monday as they looked for those missing from a typhoon that left as many as 36 dead and caused serious damage in central and northern Japan.

Typhoon Hagibis unleashed torrents of rain and strong winds Saturday that left thousands of homes on Japan’s main island flooded, damaged or without power.

Authorities warned more mudslides were possible with rain forecast for the affected area during the day Monday.

Russia delivers to China first Mi-171 helicopter with VK-2500 engines

TIANJIN, October 12. /TASS/: The Russian Helicopters holding delivered the first Mi-171 helicopter with VK-2500 engines to China. The portfolio of orders for such helicopters amounts to 12, a spokesperson of the Russian company told TASS at the China Helicopter Exposition.

"The first Mi-171 helicopter with VK-2500 engines was supplied to a Chinese customer. Contracts for supply of twelve more helicopters to Chinese customers were signed and are performed," the spokesperson said.

Lee Nak-yon, whose trip is scheduled for Oct. 22-24, will attend Japanese Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement ceremony, Lee’s office said in a statement.

China's Xi warns attempts to divide China will end in 'shuttered bones'

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping warned on Sunday that any attempt to divide China will be crushed, as Beijing faces political challenges in months-long protests in Hong Kong and U.S. criticism over its treatment of Muslim minority groups.

“Anyone attempting to split China in any part of the country will end in crushed bodies and shuttered bones,” he told Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in a meeting on Sunday, according to China’s state broadcaster CCTV.

Death Toll Rises To Ten As Typhoon Hagibis Lashes Japan

TOKYO, Oct 13 (NNN-NHK) – Ten people have died, and around 100 people injured, as of 10:30 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) today (Sunday), as Typhoon Hagibis ripped through Japan, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, with many rivers overflowing into residential areas across a wide area of the country.

Meanwhile, 14 people are missing across the country, according to a Kyodo News tally, based on information provided by rescuers and other authorities. The number of the missing is 15 from an NHK tally.

31 Passengers Kidnapped By Insurgents In Myanmar’s Western State

YANGON, Oct 13 (NNN-MNA) – Some 31 passengers have been kidnapped from an express bus, by an insurgent group, in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, said police Sunday.

The passengers, including 19 Fire Department personnel and 12 civilians, were abducted by the Arakan Army (AA) from the Shwepyitha express bus, on Mrauk U-Sittway road, in Mrauk U township.

When the bus stopped for a man in civilian cloth at the roadside signalling the bus to stop, 18 armed men emerged from the forest and took away the 31 passengers into the forest.

Hong Kong protesters plan assemblies in 18 districts

HONG KONG (AP) — Black-clad protesters calling for political reforms have started gathering in several Hong Kong districts.

The demonstrators congregated Sunday in shopping malls in Sha Tin and Tseun Wan holding umbrellas and wearing masks in defiance of a recently imposed ban on face coverings.

They called on people to assemble simultaneously in 18 different districts — an apparent effort to divide up police resources. Baton-wielding riot police stood on a foot bridge in Tai Po.
