India: IPL returns home bigger than ever

Mumbai, Mar 25 (PTI) Indian cricket's crown jewel, the IPL, is back home: bigger, better and longer.

It will be the first time since 2011 that 10 teams be fighting it out for the most coveted T20 trophy in world cricket.

Two new entrants, Lucknow Supergiants and Gujarat Titans, fetching a combined price of approximately USD 1.7 billion shows that brand IPL keeps getting bigger.

It took 14 years but the league has now well and truly gone global.

Arsenal football player Thomas Partey converts to Islam

20 March 2022; MEMO: Ghanaian player Thomas Partey, who plays for the Arsenal football club, announced that he has converted to Islam.

Sheikh Muhammad Al-Azhari, an imam, preacher and researcher in Sharia sciences in London, announced that the Ghanaian player took his Shahada at a mosque in London and declared his conversion to Islam.

Partey joined Arsenal about two years ago from Atletico Madrid for a sum of £45 million.

Russia, Belarus banned from multi-sport Euro Championships

Munich, Mar 17 (AP) Athletes from Russia and Belarus were formally banned from the multi-sport European Championships in August.

Organizers of the Aug. 11-21 championships in Munich, Germany, said they supported decisions by officials from the nine individual sports not to invite Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials. They have followed guidance from the International Olympic Committee.

Euro backlash as FIFA refuses to expel Russia from football

LONDON (AP) — FIFA drew a swift backlash from European nations for not immediately expelling Russia from World Cup qualifying on Sunday and only ordering the country to play without its flag and anthem at neutral venues under the name of its federation — the Football Union of Russia.

Protesting against FIFA’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Poland said it would still refuse to play the country in a World Cup playoff semifinal, which is scheduled for March 24.

India: Wushu player Sadia Tariq wins gold at Moscow tournament

New Delhi, Feb 26 (PTI) Indian wushu player Sadia Tariq has won a gold medal at a junior tournament being held in Moscow.

The 15-year-old from Srinagar has been a gold medallist in the junior national championship for the last two years. She won the top honours in the Russian capital on Friday.

"Congratulations to Sadia Tariq on winning the Gold medal at the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship," tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating the youngster.

India: Mumbai to host IOC session in 2023

Mumbai, Feb 19 (PTI) The International Olympic Committee on Saturday awarded India the right to host the IOC Session in Mumbai next year.

Nita Ambani, the Indian representative on the committee, described it as "a significant development for the country's Olympic aspiration".

India will host the session for the first time since 1983. The session will be hosted at the state-of-the-art, brand new Jio World Convention Centre.

Egypt reach Africa Cup of Nations final

06 Feb 2022; MEMO: Egypt sealed a 3-1 win against Cameroon on penalties Thursday to face Senegal in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, Anadolu Agency reported.

Both sides failed to break the deadlock during the match and extra time at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Cameroon's capital Yaounde.

Ahmed Sayed, Mohamed Abdelmonem and Mohanad Lasheen converted their spot kicks against hosts Cameroon during the penalty shootout.

FIFA calls on Qatar to allow alcohol sales in World Cup 2022 stadiums

04 Feb 2022; MEMO: The international football association FIFA is pressuring Qatar to allow alcohol sales in stadiums during the 2022 World Cup.

Bloomberg quoted informed sources as saying that Qatari officials were "weighing whether to relax the country's ban on alcohol at sporting events," noting that the deliberations were centered on whether to allow lower-alcohol products inside the venues.
