India loses seat on FIA World Motor Sport Council

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) India has lost its seat on the FIA's all powerful World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) for the first time in more than three decades.

Incumbent Gautam Singhania lost in the elections held for 14 WMSC seats reserved for titular members. The development came on the day when Mohammed Ben Sulayem replaced Jean Todt as the next FIA president.

The WMSC members also include the president, deputy president and seven vice-presidents.

Mo Salah wins 2021 Africa Player of the Year award

14 Dec 2021; MEMO: The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) yesterday announced that the Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah had won the Africa Player of the Year award for 2021.

The IFFHS released a photo on its website displaying Salah receiving the award which comes among several awards conferred by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Algeria beats Morocco in FIFA Arab Cup, players raise Palestinian flags

12 Dec 2021; MEMO: Algeria secured a place in the semi-finals of the FIFA Arab Cup yesterday by beating Morocco in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, winning 5-3.

The quarter-final fixture at Qatar's Al-Thumama stadium saw the two North African teams level in the second half, after Algeria's Yacine Brahimi scored first in the 62nd minute, with Morocco's Mohammed Nahiri equalising just two minutes later.

India: Football legend Maradona's stolen watch found in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 11 (PTI) Football legend Diego Maradona's watch, allegedly stolen in Dubai, was recovered from Assam's Sivasagar district on Saturday morning, following which a person was arrested, police said.

The accused person was working as a security guard at a company in Dubai in UAE that was storing the belongings of the late Argentinian footballer, they said.

The accused is suspected to be involved in the theft of a safe in which the limited edition Hublot watch was also kept, Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said.

Russia wins Davis Cup after 15-year wait

Madrid, Dec 6 (AP) Russia's 15-year wait for a Davis Cup title ended after another clutch performance from Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev capped his amazing year with a 7-6 (7), 6-2 win over Marin Cilic in the second singles match to give Russia an insurmountable 2-0 lead over Croatia and its first Davis Cup title since 2006.

India: Mumbai Cricket Association felicitates Ajaz Patel for his rare feat

Mumbai, Dec 6 (PTI) Mumbai Cricket Association chief Vijay Patil on Monday felicitated New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel, who became only the third bowler to take all 10 wickets in an innings.

The Mumbai-born Ajaz joined Jim Laker and Anil Kumble in the rare 10-wicket club after taking all 10 wickets of India's first innings in the second Test which the hosts won by 372 runs.

"MCA President Vijay Patil felicitated Ajaz Patel with the score sheet and a momento," a senior MCA official told PTI.

New Zealand 38 for six after Ajaz Patel's historic show

Mumbai, Dec 4 (PTI) New Zealand were tottering at 38 for six at tea after left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel became only the third bowler in history to take all 10 wickets in an innings on day two of the second Test here on Saturday.

India were all out for 325 during the second session with Patel entering the history books.

Indian bowlers then ran through New Zealand batting with Mohammed Siraj taking three wickets.

India: First Test match between India & NZ provides thrill to cricket fans

Kanpur: The Test match remains a connoisseur's delight. New Zealand pulled off a draw against India at Green Park here. It was a result that sends an impression of a win for the visitors.

It was a perfect battle between bat and ball. Everything was up for grabs in the first innings and it turned out to be a test of character in the second.

Credit goes to New Zealand who have pulled off a memorable draw.

The match produced everything one could have wished.

India: Shreyas Iyer's feat in Test debut at Kanpur earns plaudits

Kanpur: Shreyas Iyer on Sunday became the first Indian to score a century and a half-century on Test debut.

He slammed his maiden Test century (105) on Day 2 of the Kanpur Test in India's first innings against New Zealand. 

After Prithvi Shaw, he becomes the 16th Indian to score a century on Test debut.

It will be apt to mention here that Prithvi Shaw had reached the triple-figure mark against the West Indies in Rajkot in October 2018.
