Air Canada Laying Off More Than 5,100 Attendants Due To COVID

OTTAWA, Mar 22 (NNN-XINHUA) – Air Canada is laying off more than 5,000 flight attendants, as the country’s largest airline cuts routes and parks planes, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wesley Lesosky, who heads the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, said that, the Canadian carrier is laying off about 3,600 mainline employees, as well as all of Air Canada Rouge’s 1,549 flight attendants.

Trudeau pushing manufacturers to quickly produce life-saving supplies against COVID-19 pandemic

OTTAWA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new measures Friday morning to mobilize manufacturers to quickly produce vital life-saving medical supplies against the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

"We are launching Canada's plan to mobilize industry to fight COVID-19 to ensure that we can quickly produce here in Canada the things we need," Trudeau told a news conference at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, where he has been self-isolating after his wife tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

US, Canada working on mutual ban on non-essential travel

TORONTO (AP) — Canada and the United States are working out the details of a mutual ban on non-essential travel between the two countries amid the new coronavirus pandemic, a Canadian official said late Tuesday.

The official was not authorized to discuss details amid discussions and ahead of an announcement and spoke to The Associated Press on condition anonymity.

Both countries are eager to choke off the spread of the virus but also eager to continue the critical economic relationship. Canada relies on the U.S. for 75 percent of its exports.

Canadian Parliament rushes through ratification of USMCA trade pact

Canada gains surprise 30,300 jobs in February, jobless rate climbs to 5.6%

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada gained a higher-than-expected 30,300 net jobs in February while the unemployment rate rose to 5.6%, official data showed on Friday.

Analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast a gain of 10,000 jobs in February and an unemployment rate of 5.6%. Wages for permanent employees - a metric watched closely by the Bank of Canada - rose by 4.3%, Statistics Canada said.
