India: DCW issues notice to police over rape of JNU student

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) The Delhi Commission for Women issued a notice to police on Tuesday seeking details of the investigation in the alleged rape of a second-year student of the JNU by a cab driver.

According to media reports, the 21-year-old was allegedly drugged and raped by the driver of a cab she had booked while returning from a friend's home on Friday night, the DCW said.

She was then allegedly dumped in a park in a semi-conscious state and was found by locals, it added.

India: Voices of dissent within Cong on Article 370

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) A number of Congress leaders across the country have gone against the party's stand in Parliament on abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir by supporting the Centre's move and a bill to bifurcate the state.

The Congress has strongly opposed the move and the bill to bifurcate the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.

India: Woman alleges molestation on board Rajdhani

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) A woman was allegedly molested on board the Delhi-Ranchi Rajdhani Express by a train ticket examiner and the pantry staff, prompting the railways to start an inquiry into the matter.

An acquaintance of the woman, who is a student, tweeted on Tuesday night, alleging that the victim was drugged by the railway staff.

India: Unnao rapist Kuldeep Sengar to be shifted to Tihar jail

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) A Delhi court directed on Monday that expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, accused of raping a minor girl at his residence in Unnao in 2017, be shifted to Tihar jail here from Sitapur prison in Uttar Pradesh.

District Judge Dharmesh Sharma put up the matter for argument on framing charges in the rape case -- one of the four related cases transferred to Delhi -- for August 7.

India: Ayodhya mosque dispute: place has been in 'exclusive possession' of Akhara

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Nirmohi Akhara, one of the parties in the politically sensitive case of the Ayodhya land dispute, told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that no Muslims were allowed to enter the structure since 1934 and it has been in exclusive possession of the Akhara.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, was told by senior advocate Sushil Jain, appearing for Nirmohi Akhara, that it was seeking management and possession of the area.

India: J-K internal matter or bilateral issue: Cong A R Chowdhury

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) The Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday sought to know from the government whether Jammu and Kashmir was an internal matter or a bilateral issue, saying the United Nations has been monitoring the situation there since 1948.

Chowdhury's remarks triggered protests from treasury benches.

India: 2 Cong's and SP's members resigned from the Upper House

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) In another setback for the Congress, its Rajya Sabha MP and chief whip Bhubaneshwar Kalita resigned from the membership of the House on Monday.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaih Naidu announced in the House that he has accepted Kalita's resignation.

Samajwadi Party member from Uttar Pradesh Sanjay Seth also resigned from the Upper House and the chairman accepted his resignation.

India: Prisoners do not have voting rights: EC tells Delhi HC

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The Delhi High Court was informed on Monday by the Election Commission of India (ECI) that prisoners do not have voting rights under the Representation of People Act and it has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The poll panel said the right to vote is a statutory right created under Section 62 of the Representation of People Act, and the law is settled that the "right to vote being a statutory right is subject to the restrictions prescribed in the RP Act".
