Lightning Kills 17 In India’s Eastern State

NEW DELHI, Sept 18 (NNN-PTI) – As many as 17 people, some children, have died in incidents of lightning strikes, in different parts of Bihar state, India, in the last 24 hours, media reports said today (Wednesday).

According to a report by Zee News, four deaths were reported in the state’s Kaimur district, four in Gaya, one in Katihar, three in Motihari, one in Ara and two each in Jahanabad and Arwal districts.

Several parts of the state have been witnessing heavy rains over the past 24 hours.

India: Three persons arrested in Bettiah gangrape case: Police

Bettiah/Patna, Sep 17 (PTI) Three accused, named by an 18-year-old former inmate of a Muzaffarpur shelter home who has alleged that she was gangraped inside a moving vehicle, has been arrested, police said on Tuesday.

Another man has been detained in this connection, they said.

The woman was allegedly raped by four persons in a moving vehicle in Bettiah town on Friday evening.

India: Nitish failed to uplift minorities in Bihar: AIMIM

Patna, Sep 14 (PTI) Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM on Saturday charged Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with having failed to fulfil his promise of uplifting the state's minorities, and demanded a "white paper" on their representation in various government jobs.

The party's Bihar unit president Akhtarul Iman also flayed the JD(U) chief for tying up with the BJP after returning to power for his third consecutive term in 2015, when the state's minorities had extended him their whole- hearted support for keeping the saffron party out of power.

India: Bihar police makes bikers buy helmets, get insurance renewed on spot

Motihari (Bihar), Sep 10 (PTI) Motorcycle riders in Bihar's Motihari town are getting the surprise of their lives upon being let off by police for riding without helmet or lapsed insurance, but not before they purchase the headgear from vendors or get their policy renewed through agents present there.

The drive has been launched in East Champaran district's Motihari by Chhatauni police station SHO Mukesh Chandra Kunwar.

India: Gangraped minor girl tonsured, paraded in Bihar

Patna, Aug 28 (PTI) Members of a panchayat in Bihar's Gaya district "punished" a gangraped minor girl by tonsuring her head and parading her through the village, a police officer said here on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old girl was kidnapped by residents of her village on August 14 and gangraped, sources in the police headquarters said.

The girl narrated the incident to her parents who then approached the local panchayat for justice two days later.

India: Two minor girls murdered after suspected rape in Bihar

Katihar (Bihar), Aug 8 (PTI) Two minor girls, cousins by relation, were killed after suspected sexual assault in Katihar district of Bihar, police said on Thursday.

Their mutilated, semi-nude bodies tied together with a "chunri" were found in a field in Chaukia Pahadpur Diyara village under Amdabad police station limits.

Bruises and cut marks were visible on the bodies including on their private parts, though rape could be confirmed only after post-mortem, police said.

India: Petition in Bihar court against intellectuals who wrote to PM on hate crimes

Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Jul 27 (PTI) A petition was filed in a Bihar court on Saturday against 49 eminent citizens, who had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on lynching of minorities and hate crimes, seeking slapping of sedition and other charges.

The petition was filed by an advocate before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, relating to sedition, imputations and assertions prejudicial to national-integration and hurting religious feelings.

India: Death toll in Assam, Bihar floods reaches 198

Guwahati/Patna, July 25 (PTI) The death toll in Bihar and Assam floods mounted to 198 on Thursday, with more than 1.17 crore people affected by the calamity in the two states, officials said.

In Assam, the death toll climbed to to 75 with one more person succumbing in Dhubri, while water level rose in seven districts of the state.

Due to release of excess water from Kuricchu Hydropower reservoirs in Bhutan's Kuricchu River, western Assam districts of Barpeta, Nalbari, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri and South Salmara are facing rise in flood water level.

India: 3 Naxal terrorists killed in encounter in Bihar

Patna, Jul 25 (PTI) Three Naxals were killed in an encounter with security forces in a forest area of Bihar's Gaya district on Thursday, officials said.

The firefight took place around noon between the ultras and a joint team of the CRPF's CoBRA squad and district police in the Chakarabandh area of the district, they said.

As the guns fell silent, the bodies of three Maoists were found in the spot, the officials said, adding that seven guns, including an AK-47 and three INSAS rifles, and some improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were also recovered.

Idia: Three lynched in Bihar village on suspicion of cattle theft

Chapra, Jul 19; GANASHAKTI: Three people were lynched at a village in Bihar's Saran district Friday morning by a mob that caught hold of them while they were allegedly stealing cattle, police said.

The incident took place in the wee hours at Paigambarpur village under Baniapur police station.

The deceased have been identified as Raju Nat, Bides Nat and Naushad Qureshi, Superintendent of Police Har Kishore Rai said.
