India: NRC, what for? Not to be implemented in Bihar: Nitish Kumar

Patna, Dec 20 (PTI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday asserted that National Register for Citizens will not be implemented in the state, putting at rest speculations raised by his JD(U)s support to the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Kumar made this clear in a terse reply to queries from journalists who had sought his response on the proposed country-wide implementation of NRC, including Bihar, as stated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the floor of the Parliament.

India: Nitish writes to PM to ban porn sites

Patna, Dec 17 (PTI) Blaming porn sites for the rising incidents of sexual crime against women, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to ban all "porn sites and inappropriate content" available online.

In the letter, Kumar expressed his "pain and serious concern" over the increasing number of gangrape cases which have agitated the general public.

India: RJD resolves to install Tejashwi as Bihar's next CM

Patna, Dec 10 (PTI) The Rashtriya Janata Dal on Tuesday resolved to install Lalu Prasads heir apparent Tejashwi Yadav as the next Chief Minister of Bihar and defeat the current dispensation, headed by Nitish Kumar, in the assembly elections due next year.

A resolution to the effect was passed by the RJDs national council meeting here, which was for the first time held in the absence of its founding president who is in Ranchi serving sentences in fodder scam cases.

India: Army to shut down Officers Training Academy in Gaya

New Delhi, Dec 11 (PTI) The Army will shut down its Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya, Bihar, as it has become unviable and is being used below its capacity, sources said on Wednesday.

An Army official said a proposal was sent to the Defence Ministry that the OTA should be shut as it is "not serving the purpose the way it was planned". The ministry has approved the proposal, the official added.

India: Rape, POCSO case probes should be completed in 2 months

Patna, Dec 8 (PTI) Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday said he would write to chief ministers and high court chief justices of all the states to complete investigation into cases of rape and those registered under the POCSO Act in two months.

Trial of such cases should also be completed within six months, the Union law and justice minister said.

India: Woman set on fire in Bihar after failed rape bid

Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Dec 9 (PTI) A young woman was allegedly set on fire by a neighbour after she resisted his attempt to rape her, a police officer said here on Monday.

The 23-year-old victim, who suffered 50 per cent burns in the incident, was currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in the Muzaffarpur town, he said.

India: Case filed against Paswan over onion price rise

Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Dec 7 (PTI) A criminal complaint case was filed against union minister Ram Vilas Paswan in Muzaffarpur Civil Court on Saturday for "misleading and cheating" people on the rise in the price of onions.

The case was filed by a person named M Raju Nayyar, who claims to be a social worker, in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Surya Kant Tiwary who posted the matter for hearing on December 12.

India: Girl raped, shot dead & burnt in Bihar's Buxar

Buxar, Dec 3 (PTI) In a gruesome incident akin to the Hyderabad veterinary doctor killing, a girl was shot dead and burnt after being allegedly raped in Kukudha village of Bihar's Buxar district on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

Police recovered the charred body of the girl this morning (around 6 am) from a deserted field under the jurisdiction of Itadhi police station, Buxar Deputy Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar told PTI.

India: Jailed Lalu re-elected RJD chief

Patna, Dec 3 (PTI) Incarcerated Lalu Prasad was on Tuesday re-elected as the national president of his Rashtriya Janata Dal for the 11th consecutive term.

Prasad, who had founded the party in 1997, is at Ranchi serving sentences in fodder scam cases and his nomination papers were submitted at the RJD state headquarters by his sons Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav.
