UN rights chief urges States to do more to stop discrimination after US' whitist terror attacks

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 07 (APP): The UN’s top rights official has added her voice to condemnation of the weekend mass-shootings in the U.S. cities of El Paso and Dayton, insisting on Tuesday that “not just the US, but all States” should do more to stop discrimination.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Tourists and Kashmiri locals who reached Delhi on Tuesday appeared relieved at being out of the uncertainty sweeping the Valley but expressed their angst at the situation there, with some saying it is akin to the Stone Age without lines of communication.

They also rued the heavy security deployment in the Valley as tension persisted in the region over revoking of the provisions of Article 370, which gave special powers to the state.

India: Voices of dissent within Cong on Article 370

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) A number of Congress leaders across the country have gone against the party's stand in Parliament on abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir by supporting the Centre's move and a bill to bifurcate the state.

The Congress has strongly opposed the move and the bill to bifurcate the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.

India: Woman alleges molestation on board Rajdhani

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) A woman was allegedly molested on board the Delhi-Ranchi Rajdhani Express by a train ticket examiner and the pantry staff, prompting the railways to start an inquiry into the matter.

An acquaintance of the woman, who is a student, tweeted on Tuesday night, alleging that the victim was drugged by the railway staff.

Iran: US imposed sanctions on FM after he rejected to meet Trump

6 Aug 2019; MEMO: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif said yesterday that the US imposed sanctions on him after he had refused to meet with US President Donald Trump, DPA reported.

Speaking in a press conference in Tehran, Zarif said: “While I was in New York, I was informed that sanctions to be imposed on me if I did not accept the invitation [to meet with Trump]… I did not accept it.”

US "closely following" Kashmir; urges stakeholders to maintain peace along LoC

Pakistan holds joint session of Parliament to discuss Kashmir issue

Islamabad, Aug 6; GANASHAKTI: Amid ruckus by Opposition lawmakers, Pakistan on Tuesday held a joint session of its Parliament to discuss its future course of action after India revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status and proposed to bifurcate the state into two union territories.

National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser briefly adjourned the joint session after Opposition lawmakers disrupted the proceedings in the House, protesting that the day's agenda did not specifically mention Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.

Media watchdog in US urges India to restore internet, communications services in Kashmir

Washington, Aug 6; GANASHAKTI: A US-based media watchdog has urged India to ensure access to internet and communications services in Kashmir, which were suspended in the Valley as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.

Kashmir remained on the edge as authorities stepped up security at vital installations and in sensitive areas, suspended mobile Internet services and either "arrested" or "detained" several leaders in fast-paced developments on Sunday night.
