India: Muslims get succour from Hindus at NRC Seva Kendras in Assam

Guwahati, Aug 11 (PTI) Thousands of Muslims straining to meet the deadline for the crucial re-verification of the citizen's register in Assam at a short notice earlier this month found succour from the Hindus.

These people from Kamrup, Goalpara and South Salmara districts in lower Assam had received the National Register of Citizens (NRC) notices on August 3 asking them to appear within 24-48 hours at NRC Seva Kendras 400 km away in Sivsagar, Charaideo and Golaghat districts in upper Assam.

EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rouke on Saturday joined a march in the Texas border city of El Paso to condemn last week’s mass shooting there, telling the crowd that President Donald Trump was partly responsible for the hatred that inspired it.

The gunman, identified by authorities as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, killed 22 people, most of them Hispanic, when he opened fire at a Walmart store last Saturday.

India: Migrant labourers continue to leave Kashmir Valley, narrate hardships

Jammu, Aug 10 (PTI) Desperate to make their way home, hundreds of migrant labourers continue to arrive at Jammu and Udhampur railway stations from Kashmir region, with many complaining they were not paid fully by their employers and overcharged by private transporters.

Officials said over 50,000 labourers have been ferried by the railways to their respective states in the last five days. Yet, the railway stations are chock-a-block with people waiting for special trains out of the state.

India: Cong demands Khattar's dismissal over 'brides from Kashmir' remark

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday demanded immediate dismissal of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and an FIR against him over the controversial 'brides from Kashmir' remark, with party leader Rahul Gandhi claiming his comments reflect what RSS training does to the mind of a "weak, insecure and pathetic man".

Khattar hit back at Gandhi saying "weak, insecure and pathetic" are adjectives that people use for the Congress president as he accused him of "manufacturing statements".

India: Dalits protest demolition of Delhi's Guru Ravidas temple

Phagwara, Aug 10 (PTI) Amid reports of the demolition of a temple dedicated to Guru Ravidas by the authorities on the direction of the apex court at Tughlakabad in New Delhi on Saturday, Dalits held protests at several places in Punjab's Doaba region.

They blocked the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway, resulting in a traffic jam for over two hours.

Reports of protests by Dalits also poured in from Nawanshahr, Adampur, Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur.

India: NC moves SC challenging Presidential Order on Article 370

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) The National Conference on Saturday moved the Supreme Court, challenging the Presidential Order on Article 370 that revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

The petition filed by NC leaders Mohammad AKbar Lone and Hasnain Masoodi sought a direction from the apex court to declare the Presidential Order relating to Article 370 as "unconstitutional, void and inoperative" in Jammu and Kashmir.

The NC also sought to declare the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 as "unconstitutional".
