India: Man pronounces triple talaq on wife in UP after talaq bill

Mathura, Aug 2 (PTI) A police station here has booked a man for pronouncing triple talaq on his wife, probably the first such case since the enactment of the law punishing the practice.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill prescribing up to three years imprisonment for men giving instant triple talaq to their wives and was passed by Parliament on Tuesday.

President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to the triple talaq bill on Thursday.

India: RSS welcomes SC order of daily hearing in Ayodhya Mosque case

Nagpur, Aug 2 (PTI) The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to hold day- to-day hearing of Ayodhya dispute, expressing hope that legal obstacles in the way of construction of Ram temple will be removed soon.

The apex court, earlier in the day, ordered day-to-day hearing from August 6 of the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case, noting that mediation efforts have failed.

India: Unnao rape; CBI supplemented by 20 officers, recreates accident

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) A six-member team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory used a car of similar make to recreate the fatal accident scene involving the Unnao rape survivor in Rae Bareli, officials said on Friday.

The team of forensic experts will support the five-member CBI investigation unit in Lucknow which has been supplemented by 20 officers of an additional special team dispatched from Delhi, CBI spokesperson Nitin Wakankar said here.

Kashmiri killed by Indian security forces in Shopian Dist of Indian administered Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 02: A Kashmiri has been killed in an alleged encounter with Indian security forces in Shopian district of Indian administered Kashmir, an Indian official said.

The Indian security forces' spokesperson alleged that a cordon and search operation was underway in the area following information about presence of Kashmiri separatist.

India: SC decision in Unnao case stamp on "jungle raj" in UP: Priyanka

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said the Supreme Court's ruling in the Unnao rape case is a "stamp" on the prevailing "jungle raj" in Uttar Pradesh and the state government's failure.

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a slew of instructions in the case, including directing the transfer of all five cases registered in connection with the Unnao rape incident from a court in Uttar Pradesh to a court in the national capital.

India: Muslim org to challenge Triple Talaq Act in SC

Hyderabad, Aug 1 (PTI) Hitting out at the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre over passage of triple talaq bill in the Parliament, a city-based Muslim organisation said on Thursday that it would move the Supreme Court against the law.

The Seerat un Nabi (PBUH) Academy alleged that the central government has sought to dilute the 'Muslim Sharia' (Islamic law).

".. lot of things need to be done for Muslim welfare. But, the BJP government chose only to dilute Muslim sharia.

India: Opposition slams amendment to UAPA, call it draconian

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Opposition parties on Friday slammed the amendment to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act which will empower government to declare individuals as terrorists, saying the new law was "draconian" and could be misused against anyone opposed to the ruling establishment.

Resuming the discussion in Rajya Sabha on the amendment, Elamaram Kareem (CPM) said the government was imposing "state terrorism" and dissenting individuals can be declared terrorist.

"This will lead to large-scale harassment and injustice," he said

130 Egyptian detainees on hunger strike for 6 weeks: Amnesty

1 Aug 2019; MEMO: Amnesty International announced, Wednesday, that 130 political prisoners in the heavily guarded Scorpion Prison in Egypt have been on hunger strike for six weeks. This is due to the harsh and inhumane detention conditions.

The international human rights organisation said that among the repressive practices by the authorities against detainees in the Scorpion Prison is the prevention of family visits and legal consultations for more than two years.

India: Unnao rape victim accident; CBI books BJP MLA for murder

New Delhi, Jul 31; GANASHAKTI: The CBI has booked BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and 10 others on murder charges in the accident case of Unnao rape survivor, officials said on Wednesday.

Immediately after filing the FIR, a team of officers from the CBI's Lucknow unit reached the crime scene in Gurubakshganj area of Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli district, where the accident took place.

According to the normal procedure, the CBI has taken over the investigation in the case from the Uttar Pradesh Police by re-registering its FIR.

India: Judge husband harassing wife, asking more dowry

Mumbai, Jul 31 (PTI) The wife of a sessions court judge in Maharashtra has written to the chief justice of the Bombay High Court complaining that her husband and in-laws were "harassing" her.

After receiving the letter on July 29, Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog forwarded it to the registry of the high court for preliminary inquiry, the woman's lawyer said on Wednesday.

In the letter, the 37-year-old woman has demanded an inquiry against her husband.
