PR push for white officer accused of killing armed black man

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The attorney for a white police officer charged with fatally shooting an armed black man in Tennessee is calling for legal discovery documents to be sealed from members of the public.

Meanwhile, a police union has launched a digital ad campaign seeking to defend the Nashville officer, Andrew Delke, and bolster his image in public. The officer shot 25-year-old Daniel Hambrick from behind during a foot chase last July and is charged with first-degree murder.

In Hebron, Palestinians patrol in place of foreign monitors

HEBRON, West Bank (AP) — Following Israel’s expulsion of an international observer force from the volatile West Bank city of Hebron, Palestinian activists are trying to fill the void by launching their own patrols to document alleged Israeli settler violence.

Armed with video cameras and donning blue vests, the activists say they will replace the Temporary International Presence in Hebron. The group has enlisted 18 volunteers and began its work this week.

War kills over 100,000 babies a year: Save the Children

15 Feb 2019; AFP: At least 100,000 babies die every year because of armed conflict and its impact, from hunger to denial of aid, Save the Children International said on Friday.

In the 10 worst-hit countries, a conservative estimate of 550,000 infants died as a result of fighting between 2013 and 2017.

They succumbed to war and its effects, among them hunger, damage to hospitals and infrastructure, a lack of access to health care and sanitation and the denial of aid.

37 Indian CRPF soldiers killed in Indian administered Kashmir

37 Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers have been killed in Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Thursday when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the bus they were travelling in.

20 people were injured in the attack that reduced the bus to a heap of iron.

Refugee held at Australia's offshore site wins rights prize

Abdul Aziz Muhamat, 26, was hailed by the Martin Ennals Award organisers for his "extraordinary tenacity and courage" in protesting the Australian government's "inhumane practices".

76 Yemenis Killed During Breaches Of Hodeidah Cease-Fire

ADEN, Yemen, Feb 13 (NNN-SABA) – A total of 76 people were killed during the period of a cease-fire, brokered by the United Nations in Dec, 2018, according to local military observers.

The Houthi rebels controlling the strategic Red Sea port city of Hodeidah have committed 1,112 cases of breach, since the beginning of the UN-brokered cease-fire on Dec 18 last year to Feb 9, the military observers said.

“Those cease-fire breaches claimed the lives of 76 people, mostly civilians, and injured 492 others, some of them with critical wounds,” read the observers’ report.

India: Curfew in Imphal amid protests over Citizenship Bill

Imphal, Feb 12 (PTI) An indefinite curfew was imposed in Manipur capital Imphal on Tuesday and mobile internet services suspended till February 16 across the state in view of the continued protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, officials said.

The state capital straddles Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

The authorities clamped curfew in the state capital amid reports that the contentious bill will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The legislation was, however, not presented in the Upper House.

70 civilians killed, wounded by U.S.-led attack in eastern Syria

DAMASCUS, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A total of 70 civilians were killed and wounded Tuesday by a U.S.-led airstrike in eastern Syria, state TV reported.

The airstrikes targeted a camp for displaced people in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour.

The airstrikes have intensified recently on Islamic State (IS)-held areas in the eastern Euphrates river region.

On Saturday, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) started on the final stage of attacks against the IS in the eastern Euphrates river region in eastern Syria.

Israel arrests 22 Palestinians in West Bank raids

JERUSALEM; 11 Feb 2019; AA: Israeli forces rounded up 22 Palestinians in overnight raids carried out across the occupied West Bank, according to the Israeli military on Monday.

The individuals were arrested for “suspected involvement in popular terrorist activities”, the army said in a statement, without elaborating on the nature of these activities.
