UN Security Council renews sanctions against Central African Republic

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Thursday adopted a resolution to extend sanctions against the Central African Republic (CAR) for another year.

Resolution 2454, adopted unanimously by the 15-member council, decides to renew the sanctions regime -- an arms embargo, travel ban and asset freeze -- till Jan. 31, 2020.

It also decides to extend the mandate of the panel of experts, which helps the Security Council with the implementation of the sanctions, till Feb. 29, 2020.

India: 3rd SC judge recuses from hearing appointment of interim CBI Director

New Delhi, Jan 31; PTI: Supreme Court Judge Justice N V Ramana Thursday recused himself from hearing a plea challenging the Centre's decision to appoint M Nageswara Rao as interim CBI Director.

Justice Ramana became the third judge of the apex court to recuse himself from hearing the matter as Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and the second senior-most judge in the court Justice A K Sikri had earlier recused themselves from adjudicating the case.

Catholic leaders in Texas name 286 accused of abusing minors

Dallas, Feb 1 (AP) Catholic leaders in Texas on Thursday identified 286 priests and others accused of sexually abusing children, a number that represents one of the largest collections of names to be released since an explosive grand jury report last year in Pennsylvania.

Fourteen dioceses in Texas named those credibly accused of abuse.

The only diocese not to provide names, Fort Worth, did so more than a decade ago and then provided an updated accounting in October.

Two Kashmiris killed by Indian security forces in Pulwama

Srinagar, Feb 1 (PTI) Two Jaish-e-Mohammad separatists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Friday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Drabgam area of Pulwama following information about presence of separatists in the area, a police official said.

NGO decries ‘extrajudicial killing’ of Palestine driver

JERUSALEM; 31 Jan 2019; AA: An Israeli rights group said Thursday that Saleh Barghouthi, a Palestinian taxi driver killed by Israeli forces last month, was shot at point-blank range in what appeared to be an “extrajudicial killing”. 

In a statement, B’Tselem, an Israeli rights NGO, said that -- contrary to assertions by Israel’s Shin Bet security agency and the Israeli army -- Barghouthi had not tried to resist arrest or run anyone over in his car.

Sea Watch rescue ship docks in Italy with 47 migrants

31 Jan 2019; DW: The latest standoff between Italy and the EU over sea rescues has ended with 47 migrants landing in Sicily. The German charity Sea Watch now fears it could be prosecuted and its boat impounded.

A charity rescue ship with 47 migrants aboard arrived at a Sicilian port on Thursday after spending two weeks at sea while Italy demanded other European states take them in.

Bahraich (UP), Jan 29 (PTI) A man has been arrested for reportedly offering allurement to a Dalit family to convert to Christianity, police said Tuesday.

According to a complaint filed by Ramesh Gautam of Ranipurva village under Rupiadeeh police station area on the Indo-Nepal border on Monday, one Dharmendra Singh was misleading him to change his religion.

Amnesty urges travel sites to ban Israel settlement listings

JERUSALEM (AP) — Amnesty International on Wednesday urged online travel sites to ban listings from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The London-based rights group’s report, titled “Destination: Occupation,” said rental sites Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia and TripAdvisor are driving tourism to settlements that most of the world considers illegal.

The Justice Department Monday unveiled 13 charges against Huawei Technologies, its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou -- the daughter of the company's founder -- and two affiliates related to violating US sanctions on Iran.
