India: BJP to launch awareness campaign against coronavirus in J-K

Jammu, Mar 15 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina on Sunday announced a month-long 'Jana Jagaran Abhiyaan' (public awareness campaign) against coronavirus in the Union Territory from March 20.

"The sensitization programme against the coronavirus will be kick started at the district level on March 20 and will be taken to the block level," Raina said chairing a meeting of office-bearers of the party here.

India: PSA against Farooq Abdullah revoked

Srinagar, Mar 13 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday revoked the Public Safety Act against former chief minister Farooq Abdullah, officials said.

In an order, state Home Secretary Shaleen Kabra said the PSA invoked on Abdullah on September 17 and further extended on December 13, has been revoked.

The order comes into force with immediate effect.

India: Broadband internet services restored in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 5 (PTI) Broadband internet services were restored in Kashmir on Thursday, a day after the Jammu and Kashmir administration lifted a ban on social media in the Union territory, ending a seven-month information blackout in the valley, officials said.

Internet services were snapped across all platforms on August 4 last year. The next day, the Centre revoked the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

India: Schools reopen in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Feb 24 (PTI) Donning uniforms after nearly seven months, thousands of students on Monday turned up at their schools that re-opened across the Kashmir Valley after remaining shut since August last due to the situation following abrogation of Article 370 and winter vacation.

All security arrangements were put in place for the students to attend schools, officials said.

Nine Dead, Five Injured As Vehicle Falls Into Deep Gorge In Indian-Controlled Kashmir

NEW DELHI, Feb 23 (NNN-PTI) – Nine people died and five others were injured, when a vehicle fell into a deep gorge, in Indian-controlled Kashmir, a local police official said, over the phone.

The accident occurred in the Malhar area of Kathua district, on Saturday evening (last night), the police official said.

“Eye-witnesses said that the vehicle, a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), carrying 14 people, was being driven at a high speed.

The driver lost control of the vehicle at a sudden turn, and, as a result, the vehicle fell into a deep gorge,” the police said.

Indian freelance journalist wins AFP's Kate Webb Prize

Hong Kong, Feb 20 (AFP/PTI) Ahmer Khan, the 27-year-old Indian freelance reporter, was named the winner of the 2019 Agence France-Presse Kate Webb Prize on Thursday for his coverage on the ground in Kashmir during the lockdown of the region.

The award, named after one of AFP's finest correspondents, recognises journalism by locally hired reporters in Asia operating in risky or difficult conditions.

India: Mir not allowed to visit Srinagar: J-K Cong to CEO

Jammu, Feb 18 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir Congress on Tuesday claimed that despite issuance of notification for the panchayat by-election in the union territory, its chief GA Mir was not allowed to visit Srinagar to hold poll-related meetings.

The Congress leadership raised the issue at a pre-poll meeting with J&K Chief Election Officer (CEO) Shalinder Kumar.

Three Seperatist Killed In Indian-Controlled Kashmir Gunfight

NEW DELHI, Feb 19 (NNN-PTI) – Three militants were killed today, in a fierce gunfight with government forces, in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out in Tral area of Pulwama district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

A senior police official, posted in Pulwama said, “The operation was carried out jointly by the army, paramilitary and police.”
