UN chief urges Karabakh talks under international format

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for renewed negotiations over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region under a long-established international process after a ceasefire halted recent fighting there.

Russia, the United States and France co-chair the Minsk Group, which has led talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan seeking a solution to the conflict for decades but has failed to reach a lasting agreement.

USA: NYC shootings rise to new highs: NYPD

NEW YORK, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- In the first 11 months of 2020, shootings in New York City surged to levels unseen in years, according to the latest figures provided by the New York Police Department (NYPD).

From January to November, the number of shootings in New York City rose by 95 percent over the same period last year, or 1,412 vs. 721, said NYPD.

In November alone, the number of shootings in the city increased 112 percent over the same period last year, or 115 vs. 51, it added.

USA: NYS COVID-19 test positivity rates trend down: governor

NEW YORK, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Of the 215,401 COVID-19 tests made on Friday in New York State, 10,761 were positive, or 4.99 percent of the total, down from 5.41 percent one day earlier, tweeted Governor Andrew Cuomo on Saturday.

The rate announced on Friday surpassed 5 percent for the first time in months. It topped 4 percent on Nov. 28 for the first time since May and has remained above the level so far.

UN chief Guterres, 36 UK lawmakers express support for farmers' protest in India

United Nations/London, Dec 5 (PTI) The spokesperson for UN chief Antonio Guterres and a group of 36 cross-party UK parliamentarians have come out in support of the agitating Indian farmers, saying people have a right to demonstrate peacefully and authorities should let them do so.

These reactions came even as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated his support for the protesting farmers despite India's strong reaction to his earlier remarks that Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protests.

Judge: Trump administration must take new DACA applications

NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump administration must accept new applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects some young immigrants from deportation, a federal judge ruled Friday, in vacating a memo from the acting Homeland Security secretary that had suspended it.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis said the government had to post a public notice within three days — including on its website and the websites of all other relevant government agencies — that new DACA applications were being accepted.

Coronavirus could push over 200 million more people into extreme poverty: UN data

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 03 (APP): An additional 207 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty by 2030, due to the severe long-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic, bringing the total number to more than a billion worldwide, a new study from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) has found.

According to the study, released on Thursday, such a “high damage” scenario would mean a protracted recovery from COVID-19, anticipating that 80 per cent of the pandemic-induced economic crisis would continue over a decade.

U.S. House Democrats adopt mobile internet voting for leadership contests

(Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers used a mobile phone app over the last two weeks to remotely cast votes for the first time, according to technologists and some involved in the process, embracing technology to facilitate an internal party leadership contest.

The development marks a shift in how Congress is adapting to the internet, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Use of the app, named Markup ERVS, had not been publicly disclosed before Friday.

Global COVID-19 deaths pass 1.5 mln mark: Johns Hopkins University

NEW YORK, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The global COVID-19-related deaths have passed the 1.5 million mark, while the caseload worldwide has surpassed 65 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.

As of 10:26 p.m. Thursday (0326 GMT Friday), the exact number of the coronavirus cases on the university's COVID-19 dashboard was 65,169,904, and the global death toll stood at 1,505,527.

The United States, Brazil, India, and Mexico have each registered over 100,000 deaths, according to the center.
