Pakistani envoy briefs UNGA president about Kashmiris’ ordeal under India’s lockdown

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 27 (APP): Pakistani Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi met the United Nations General Assembly President Maria Fernanda Espinosa, on Monday and briefed her on the grave situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir, which is reeling under tight lockdown for the past 23 days.

Ambassador Lodhi met the 193-member Assembly president at UN Headquarters in New York on her return from a foreign tour.

Scores of accusers to speak at hearing after Epstein’s death

NEW YORK (AP) — Up to 30 women were expected to take a judge up on his invitation to speak at a hearing after financier Jeffrey Epstein killed himself before facing sex trafficking charges.

The hearing Tuesday morning was scheduled last week by U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, who presided over the case prosecutors brought against Epstein after the 66-year-old convicted felon was arrested July 6 after he arrived at a New Jersey airport from Paris.

A New York City coroner has formally classified the death a suicide. He died Aug. 10.

UN hopes for progress in talks with India for humanitarian access to Kashmir

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 24 (APP): With the humanitarian situation fast deteriorating in the Indian Occupied Kashmir, the United Nations hopes that it’s human rights officials’ negotiations with India for access to the disputed state, which is currently under lockdown, “can move forward”, UN Associate Spokesperson Eri Kaneko has said.

US stocks tumble as US-China trade war rattles investors

USA (AP) — The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged more than 600 points Friday after the latest escalation in the trade war between the U.S. and China rattled investors. The broad sell-off sent the S&P 500 to its fourth straight weekly loss.

Stocks tumbled after President Donald Trump responded angrily on Twitter following China’s announcement of new tariffs on $75 billion in U.S. goods. In one of his tweets he “hereby ordered” U.S. companies with operations in China to consider moving them to other countries — including the U.S.

Myanmar military committed ‘systematic’ sexual violence against minorities: UN experts

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 23 (APP): Myanmar’s military must stop using sexual and gender-based violence to terrorize and punish ethnic minorities, according to a new report from the United Nations International Fact-Finding Mission.

“Extreme physical violence, the openness in which it is conducted … reflects a widespread culture of tolerance towards humiliation and the deliberate infliction of severe physical and mental pain or suffering on civilians,” the report said.

China calls for preserving existing arms control system, says envoy

Russia appeals to Europeans to heed U.S. INF exit, warns of new arms race

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Russia's deputy UN envoy on Thursday appealed to European countries to heed the United States' recent withdrawal from a Cold War arms control treaty and warned of a possible new arms race.

At a Security Council meeting, Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's acting permanent representative to the United Nations, called on the Europeans to act to prevent the deployment of U.S. intermediate-range missiles on their continent.
