Number of migrants rose to 272 million globally in 2019: UN

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 18 (APP): The total number of migrants globally reached an estimated 272 million this year, posting an increase of 51 million since 2010, according to data released by the United Nations on Tuesday.

Currently, migrants comprise 3.5 per cent of the global population, compared to 2.8 per cent in the year 2000, based on the International Migrant Stock 2019, a data-set released by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

74th session of UN General Assembly opens

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The 74th session of the UN General Assembly opened at UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, president of the 74th session of the General Assembly, declared the opening of the 2019-2020 session of the most representative body of the United Nations.

In his remarks to the opening plenary meeting, Muhammad-Bande asked for action in line with the theme of this year's General Debate: "Galvanizing multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion."

UN envoy warns against military escalation in Yemen

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The top UN envoy for Yemen on Monday warned that the attack on Saudi oil facilities may drag Yemen into "a regional conflagration."

The sudden military escalation has made the task of finding a political solution to the conflict in Yemen even more compelling, Martin Griffiths told the Security Council in a briefing.

Saturday's attack on Aramco oil facilities in Saudi Arabia has consequences well beyond the region, he warned. "At a minimum, this kind of action carries the risk of dragging Yemen into a regional conflagration."

At rally, Warren decries Trump as ‘corruption in the flesh’

“Corruption has put our planet at risk. Corruption has broken our economy. And corruption is breaking our democracy,” said Warren, a Massachusetts senator who has emerged as a leading presidential contender.

Purdue’s board met Sunday evening to approve the long-expected bankruptcy filing, which the company is pursuing to restructure under terms of a proposal to settle the widespread litigation.

Oil prices surge most on record after Saudi Arabia drone attack

RIYADAH, Sept 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Global oil prices surged the most on record after a drone strike on a Saudi Arabian oil plant removed about 5 per cent of global supplies.

In one of the most dramatic oil market openings, Brent futures jumped almost $12 a barrel in the seconds after trading started on Monday, the biggest advance in dollar terms since they were launched in 1988.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate contracts were frozen for about two minutes after the scale of the jump delayed the market open.

Multicolor image of interstellar comet, discovered by Crimean astronomer, made in US

NEW YOKR, September 14. /TASS/: US astronomers made the first multicolor image of the first-ever interstellar comet C/2019 Q4 (Borisov), discovered by an amateur astronomer from Crimea, the US-based Gemini observatory said in a statement.

The comet was observed on the night of 9-10 September using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Gemini North Telescope on Hawaii’s Maunakea sleeping volcano.
