More Than 2,000 globally now Infected With Coronavirus; 56 Dead In China

SHANGHAI, Jan 26 (NNN-TOL) – More than 2,000 people globally have been infected with coronavirus, the vast majority of them in China, where 56 people have died from the disease, according to figures released today.

President Xi Jinping said, during a politburo meeting on Saturday, that, China was facing a “grave situation,” as health authorities around the world scrambled to prevent a pandemic.

Philippine volcano alert lowered, thousands return home

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine authorities on Sunday lowered the alert level at Taal Volcano, two weeks after it began spewing ash, steam and rocks, a move that will allow many of the more than 376,000 displaced villagers to return home.

A popular tourist destination just south of Manila because of its picturesque setting in the middle of a lake, Taal erupted on Jan. 12. It caused no known deaths but delivered an early crisis this year for one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations.

Virus death toll in China rises as US prepares evacuation

BEIJING (AP) — The new virus accelerated its spread in China with 56 deaths so far, and the U.S. Consulate in the epicenter of the outbreak, the central city of Wuhan, announced Sunday it will evacuate its personnel and some private citizens aboard a charter flight.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called the outbreak a grave situation, and the government stepped up efforts to restrict travel and public gatherings while rushing medical staff and supplies to Wuhan, which remains on lockdown.

Malaysia saw more than 20 million tourist arrivals in 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 (NNN-BERNAMA) – A total of 20.1 million international tourists visited Malaysia last year, bringing in total tourism revenue of RM66.1 billion for the period of January to September 2019.

China Mobilises Medical Teams To Fight New Coronavirus

WUHAN/BEIJING, Jan 25 (NNN-XINHUA) – China is mobilising medical staff to aid Wuhan, the centre of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak, as the country reported 830 confirmed cases of pneumonia, caused by the virus and 25 deaths by the end of Thursday.

By Thursday midnight, Hubei Province in central China reported 549 cumulative confirmed cases of the new coronavirus pneumonia, with 495 in Wuhan, the provincial capital. Nationwide, 29 provincial-level regions have reported confirmed cases.

Japan To Approve 40 Billion USD Extra Budget, To Support Reconstruction Efforts, Bolster SMEs

Malaysia Confirms Three Cases Of Novel Coronavirus

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 (NNN-XINHUA) – Malaysian authorities said today (Saturday) that, the first three cases of the novel coronavirus were confirmed in the southern Johor state, bordering Singapore.

The infected individuals are Chinese nationals and close relatives of a 66-year-old man who had tested positive for the disease in Singapore, namely his wife and two grandchildren, whose samples were tested positive, Malaysian Health Minister, Dzulkefly Ahmad, said.

Two Rohingya women killed as Myanmar army shells village: MP

YANGON (Reuters) - Two women, one pregnant, were killed and seven other people injured after Myanmar troops shelled a Rohingya village on Saturday, according to a lawmaker and a villager, two days after the U.N.’s highest court ordered the country to protect the minority.

Maung Kyaw Zan, a national member of parliament for Buthidaung township in northern Rakhine state, said shells fired from a nearby battalion hit Kin Taung village in the middle of the night. Government troops have been battling ethnic rebels in the state for more than a year.

Genocide charge dents halo of Myanmar’s Suu Kyi

BANGKOK (AP) — When Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi walked into the International Court of Justice last month, she gambled the remaining shreds of her hard-won international reputation on a rebuttal of accusations that her country’s military committed genocide against minority Rohingya Muslims.

The court was not persuaded. This past week, it ordered Myanmar to take all possible measures to prevent genocide against the Rohingya.
