Malaysia’s anti-corruption moves see it up on 51st spot on TI’s CPI list

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia has moved up 10 notches to the 51st spot among 180 countries in the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index for 2019.

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president Dr Muhammad Mohan said Malaysia’s score also improved to 53 out of 100 points on the CPI survey, an improvement from the 47 points it obtained the previous year. 

Flight operations resume at Changi Airport after a short disruption

SINGAPORE, Jan 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Flight operations at Singapore’s  Changi Airport were disrupted at 12.10 am Thursday due to evacuation at the Changi Control Tower.

According to  the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), the Tower had to be evacuated as the fire suppression system was activated.

CAAS said flight operations were restored at 1.40 am when Changi Control Tower resumed operations.

Najib’s SRC Trial: Difficult to get Saudi royal family to testify on RM2.6 bln donation

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama) — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today told the High Court here that it would be difficult for the defence to get a member of the Saudi royal family to testify about the RM2.6 billion donation, which he had purportedly received between 2011 and 2014.

The 67-year-old former prime minister said this during cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Datuk V.Sithambaram if any member of the royal family would be called to court to confirm the matter.

Thai government to roll out anti-smog measures to curb aggravating air quality

BANGKOK, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Wednesday announced that anti-smog measures will be announced on Thursday in an attempt to reduce the density of fine-dusts plaguing Bangkok and other major cities across the country.

The ministry's National Environment Board will issue anti-smog measures on Thursday and will address and limit the use of vehicles in the city, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Warawut Silpa-archa.

China closes off large city to stop spread of deadly virus

BEIJING (AP) — China closed off a city of more than 11 million people Thursday in an unprecedented effort to try to stop the spread of a deadly new virus that has sickened hundreds and spread to other cities and countries in the Lunar New Year travel rush.

Police, SWAT teams and paramilitary troops guarded Wuhan’s train station as last-minute travelers arrived, only those holding tickets for the last trains allowed to enter. At exactly 10 a.m., metal barriers blocked entrances while helpless would-be travelers were turned away, with some complaining they had nowhere to go.

Russia, North Korea discuss cooperation in air transportation

PYONGYANG, January 22. /TASS/: Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang Alexander Matsegora discussed joint cooperation in air transportation with North Korean Deputy Director General of the General Administration of Civil Aviation (GACA) Ri Yong Son, the diplomatic mission said on its Facebook page.

"The sides held talks to discuss issues of strengthening Russian-Korean cooperation in air transportation of passengers and cargoes with the focus on ensuring flights’ safety," the Russian Embassy said.

Malaysia: Assemblyman pleads not guilty to charge of supporting LTTE

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Gadek assemblyman G. Saminathan pleaded not guilty in the High Court here today to a charge with giving support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group via his Facebook account.

Saminathan, 35, made the plea after the charge was read to him in Tamil before Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin.

Uzbekistan’s Parliament Approves Incumbent Prime Minister To Lead Gov’t

TASHKENT, Jan 22 (NNN-XINHUA) – The legislative chamber and the senate of Uzbekistan’s newly-formed parliament, approved Abdulla Aripov, as the prime minister of the Central Asian nation, in its joint session on Tuesday (yesterday).

Uzbek President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, nominated Aripov as a candidate to lead the government for a new five-year term, noting that he has known him for more than 20 years.

China says Taiwan's role in international bodies must be under 'One China' principle

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the central government cares for the health and well-being of its Taiwan compatriots more than anyone else.

Taiwan’s participation in international bodies must be arranged under the “One China” principle, ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily news briefing in Beijing, referring to a core Chinese government policy that states Taiwan is part of China.
