Karot Hydropower Plant to be put into commercial operation by end of 2021

BEIJING, Jan 24 (APP): With about 70 percent of the overall construction completed, the 720-megawatt Karot Hydropower Plant, a major pilot project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and located some 70 km east of Capital Islamabad, is expected to be put into commercial operation by the end of 2021.

Beijing health officials declare highest emergency threat level over coronavirus outbreak

BEIJING, January 24. /TASS/: The Beijing Municipal Health Commission raised the public health threat level to its highest starting Friday 14:00 local time over the coronavirus outbreak, says Lei Haichao, its director.

The city will take emergency measures to control the spread of the virus, he said. At the moment, 29 people have been infected in Beijing, and one patient is in serious but stable condition.

Beijing has already closed the largest cultural institutions and cancelled all public Chinese New Year events.

Malaysia’s better CPI score reflects effectiveness of govt anti-corruption efforts – Liew

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia’s improvement in the Transparency International (TI) Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2019 shows the effectiveness of various anti-corruption efforts and institutional reform initiatives by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government throughout 2019.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said these initiatives include the introduction of The National Anti-Corruption Plan 2019-2023 (NACP) which outlines 22 strategies with 115 anti-corruption initiatives to combat corruption in all sectors across the country.

Coronavirus: China expands travel ban to 2 more cities

BEIJING, Jan 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Chinese officials expanded travel restrictions on Thursday to include two more cities, one of which was also ordered to lock down to mitigate the spread of a deadly coronavirus.

China has closed off access to the major port city of Wuhan, where the outbreak originated, but officials added Huanggang and Ezhou to the restricted list. Huanggang, like Wuhan previously, was also placed on lockdown.

Huanggang, 30 miles east of Wuhan, is home to 7 million people and Ezhou 1 million.

Singapore confirms first case of Wuhan virus

SINGAPORE, Jan 24 (NNN-CNA) — Singapore on Thursday announced a confirmed case of the Wuhan virus, a new coronavirus that has sickened hundreds of people and killed at least 25. 

In a media briefing, the Ministry of Health said the patient is a 66-year-old Chinese man. The Wuhan resident, who arrived in Singapore with his family on Jan 20, flew from Guangzhou via China Southern flight CZ351. 

N Korea names sharp-tongued army figure as foreign minister

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has named a sharp-tongued former army officer with little foreign policy experience as its top diplomat, in a possible indication it will take a harder line with Washington in stalled nuclear negotiations.

Ri Son Gwon’s new title as foreign minister was disclosed Friday in a Korean Central News Agency dispatch that said he attended a reception for foreign diplomats in Pyongyang the previous day. South Korean and other outside media outlets have recently reported North Korea informed foreign diplomats in Pyongyang of Ri’s job last week.

China expands lockdowns to 25M people to halt viral outbreak

BEIJING (AP) — China broadened its unprecedented, open-ended lockdowns to encompass around 25 million people Friday to try to contain a deadly new virus that has sickened hundreds, though the measures’ potential for success is uncertain.

At least eight cities have been shut down —- Wuhan, Ezhou, Huanggang, Chibi, Qianjiang, Zhijiang, Jingmen and Xiantao — all in central China’s Hubei province, where the illness has been concentrated.

China urges world community to recognize Pakistan’s counter-terrorism financing measures

TOKYO, January 23. /TASS/: During the last stage of 1956 negotiations on restoring diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, the Japanese government dropped its claim that the sovereignty of the South Kuril Islands must be determined during future talks on a peace agreement, says the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, citing previously unpublished diplomatic notes made at the time by the staff of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Myanmar leader Suu Kyi says Rohingya 'exaggerated' abuses - FT

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi admitted on Thursday that war crimes may have been committed against Rohingya Muslims but denied genocide, saying refugees had exaggerated the extent of abuses against them.

In an opinion piece published in the Financial Times ahead of an initial International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on the issue, she said Myanmar was the victim of “unsubstantiated narratives” by human rights groups and U.N investigators.

She also said the country could itself punish perpetrators through domestic mechanisms.
