India: Farmers' outfit stages protest in Nagpur

Nagpur, Dec 1 (PTI) Workers of the Swabhmani Shetkari Sanghatana on Tuesday staged demonstrations in Maharashtra's Nagpur city in support of the farmers' agitation in Delhi against the Centre's new farm laws.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting at various border points of Delhi for the last six days to protest against the new farm laws, which they fear will dismantle the minimum support price system and corporatise farming.

India: AR Rahman becomes BAFTA Breakthrough ambassador

Mumbai, Nov 30 (PTI) Academy Award-winning music composer AR Rahman on Monday was announced as the ambassador for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' (BAFTA) 'Breakthrough Initiative'.

The initiative, supported by Netflix, aims to identify, celebrate, and support up to five talents working in film, games, or TV in India.

Rahman said he is thrilled to work with BAFTA to discover talent that the country has to offer.

Indian Reserve Bank likely to maintain interest rates on heightened inflation concerns

New Delhi, Nov 29 (PTI) The Reserve Bank is likely to keep the benchmark interest rates unchanged in its next monetary policy review in view of heightened retail inflation which has persistently remained above its comfort level, feel experts.

However, with the economic growth continuing to remain in the negative territory for the second consecutive quarter ending September, the central bank is likely to continue with the accommodative monetary stance keeping the hope alive for a rate cut as and when needed.

Indian Navy finds some debris of crashed MiG-29K in Arabian sea

Mumbai/Panaji, Nov 29 (PTI) The Indian Navy has recovered some debris of the MiG-29K aircraft that went missing three days back in the Arabian Sea off the Goa coast, a spokesperson said on Sunday, adding the search continued with ships and aircraft for missing pilot Cdr Nishant Singh.

In addition to nine warships and 14 aircraft engaged in the search efforts, Indian Navy's Fast Interceptor Craft are also deployed to search waters along the coast, a defence release said.

India: Former BJP Union minister Gaikwad Patil joins NCP

Mumbai, Nov 24 (PTI) Former Union minister Jaisingrao Gaikwad Patil on Tuesday joined the NCP in the presence of its president Sharad Pawar at the party's office here a few days after he quit the BJP.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and NCP ministers such as Jayant Patil, Anil Deshmukh, Dhananjay Munde, Nawab Malik were present on the occasion.

India: Kangana moves HC to quash FIR on sedition, other charges

Mumbai, Nov 23 (PTI) Facing sedition charges, actress Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel moved the Bombay High Court on Monday, seeking to quash an FIR filed against them by the city police for allegedly "trying to create hatred and communal tension" through their social media posts.

The FIR, under sedition and other charges, was registered pursuant to orders passed by the Bandra magistrate's court directing the Mumbai police to carry out an inquiry against Ranaut and her sister following a complaint lodged against them.

India: Desalination project to come up in Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 23 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday issued orders to initiate the process to set up a 200-MLD desalination project in Manori to mitigate the water cuts faced by Mumbai in May and June every year.

Speaking at a review meeting held at his official residence 'Varsha', the CM said that due to the delayed advent of rains, Mumbai faces 10 to 15 per cent water cuts in May and June, an official statement said.

India: Mumbai Police file charge sheet in fake TRP scam against Republic TV

Mumbai, Nov 24 (PTI) The Mumbai Police on Tuesday filed a charge sheet in a court here in the alleged TRP (Television Rating Points) rigging scam.

The charge sheet was submitted before a magistrate's court by the police's Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU), which is conducting a probe into the case, an official said.

The crime branch has so far arrested 12 persons, including Republic TV's distribution head and owners of two other channels, in connection with the case, he said.

India: Sons fight over last rites of converted woman in Maha

Thane, Nov 21 (PTI) A woman, who had converted to Christianity a few years back, was buried by one of her sons after her death in Maharashtra's Palghar recently, while her another son who followed Hinduism performed her symbolic cremation, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place at Avande village in Wada tehsil of Palghar district two days back as a fallout of the dispute between the deceased woman's two sons, each following Christianity and Hinduism, over the way her last rites should be performed, they said.

Bollywood drug use case: Australian national gets bail

Mumbai, Nov 19 (PTI) A court here on Thursday granted bail to Paul Bartels, an Australian national arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for allegedly supplying drugs to people in the film industry.

Bartels, a friend of Agisilaos Demetriades, brother of actor Arjun Rampal's partner Gabriella, was arrested on November 12.
