India: Centre should scrap new farm laws: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Jan 14 (PTI) The Shiv Sena on Thursday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour the sentiments of protesting farmers and scrap new controversial farm laws, and said he will "grow bigger" in stature by doing so.

An editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' also accused the Centre of trying to end the farmers' protest by using the Supreme Court as the front.

India: 13-year-old girl gang-raped in Nashik

Nashik, Jan 11 (PTI) A 13-year-old girl has been allegedly gang-raped in Maharashtra's Nashik district following which police have arrested five men and a woman, a police official said on Monday.

A minor boy has also been detained in connection with the incident took place on Saturday in Nashik Road area, he said.

When the victim's parents returned home after work on Saturday night, they did not find their daughter in the house.

India: HC extends relief to Kangana in sedition case till Jan 25

Mumbai, Jan 11 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Monday extended the interim relief of no coercive action against actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel till January 25 in connection with an FIR registered against them under sedition and other charges.

The HC also directed the city police not to summon the duo for questioning till then.

Ranaut and her sister appeared before Bandra police in Mumbai on January 8 for recording their statement in the case, pursuant to an assurance given to HC in November last year.

India: Centre seeks dismissal of review petition on PM CARES Fund

Mumbai, Jan 9 (PTI) The Centre on Saturday sought dismissal of a review petition seeking information about funds received by the Prime Minister's Citizens Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation (PM CARES) Fund.

The Union government told the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court that audit statement of receipt and payment accounts of the PM CARES Fund for 2019-20 was available on the trust's website.

India: Mumbai witnesses worse air quality than Delhi

Mumbai, Jan 8 (PTI) Mumbai on Friday once again recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 317 which was worse than that of Delhi, an official of the India Meteorological Department said.

On Thursday too, the city's AQI was worse than that of the national capital.

The quality of air was worst in Colaba in south Mumbai on Friday as per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR-India).

With AQI of 352, the air quality in the area fell in the "very poor" category.

India: Kangana records her statement in sedition case

Mumbai, Jan 8 (PTI) Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut on Friday reached the Bandra police station here to record her statement in a case related to sedition and other charges.

Ranaut, who has been provided Y-plus category security of CRPF personnel, arrived at the police station in suburban Mumbai around 1 pm along with her advocate amid heavy media presence.

The Bandra police had registered an FIR against Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel for allegedly promoting enmity between communities through their remarks in October, an official said.

India: Maha man gets 3 years in jail for molesting minor girl

Jalna, Jan 4 (PTI) A man was sentenced to three years in jail by a court in Jalna in Maharashtra for molesting a minor girl, an official said on Monday.

District and Sessions Judge Sakharam Deshmukh convicted Vijay Dnyandev Harbak for molesting the victim on March 10, 2018 when she had gone to fetch water in Ambad area, said assistant government pleader Varsha Mukim.

He was found guilty under provisions of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and was also fined Rs 4,000, Mukim added.

India: Accused terrorist BJP MP Pragya Thakur gets exemption from appearance in court

Mumbai, Jan 5 (PTI) A special NIA court here on Tuesday granted exemption from regular appearance to BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur in the Malegaon blast case of 2008.

Thakur, who is one of the seven accused in the case being probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), appeared before the court on Monday.

India: Man gets one year RI for molesting school girls in Maha

Alibaug (Maha), Jan 1 (PTI) A special court at Alibaug in Raigad district of Maharashtra sentenced a 49-year-old man to one year of rigorous imprisonment for molesting school girls.

In the order passed recently, special court judge S S Shaikh also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict Ashwin Arvind Puranik, a local resident.

As per the complaint, Puranik molested the girls a few times while they were going to school.

India: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena workers vandalise Amazon warehouse in Mumbai

Mumbai, Dec 25 (PTI) Workers allegedly belonging to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) vandalised warehouses of e-commerce behemoth Amazon at Marol in Mumbai's Andheri suburb and in Pune city on Friday, police said.

In Pune, a local MNS leader took responsibility for the incident. A similar incident was also reported from Vasai area near Mumbai.
