India: MDMK chief Vaiko convicted in sedition case

Chennai, July 5 (PTI) MDMK chief Vaiko was on Friday convicted by a city court here in a sedition case filed in 2009 by the Tamil Nadu government.

He was sentenced to simple imprisonment for a year.

Judge J Shanthi held him guilty of the offence of sedition.

Vaiko, who was present in the court, said he never sought any leniency.

A petition was filed to suspend the conviction enabling an appeal against the order. Subsequently, the conviction and sentence were stayed for one month.

Indian Banks see whopping 73% spike in frauds at Rs 71,543 cr (Rs 715,430 mil) in FY19

Mumbai, Jul 4 (PTI) Banks have reported a massive 73 percent increase in incidents of fraud worth Rs 71,543 crore in FY19, a senior Reserve Bank official said Thursday.

Till March 2019, the top five, 10 and 100 cases of frauds cumulatively reported constituted 24 percent, 34 percent and 70 percent of all frauds, respectively, a chief general manager with the RBI Jayant Dash said.

In FY18, the banks had reported frauds worth Rs 41,167 crore, he added.

India: Rats sipping glucose at Rawatpur urban PHC

Kanpur: Rats were sipping glucose, taking medicines on its own choice at the Rawatpur Urban PHC here. This disclosure came to light after the district magistrate's inspection of the primary health center on Thursday morning. He got the videography of the irregularities persisting and enquired the CMO of the poor condition. 

When the DM Vijay Viswas Pant tried to know of the situation the staff failed to reply properly. Even the PHC Incharge Dr Anita was also not available, she came late by one hour. While taking a look at the attendance register he found absence of three ANMs.

India: Mohiit Agarwal joins as IG Kanpur Range

Kanpur: A senior IPS officer Mohiit Agarwal of 1997 batch has been appointed IG of Kanpur range.He had been SP in Unnao in the year 2004 & Kanpur Dehat in the year 2009 respectively. He belongs to Faridpur Tehsil of Bareilly district. 

Addressing the mediamen here on Thursday, he pointed out that the police would be made responsible for giving a feeling of safety to the common people.

The list of the top ten criminals will be pasted at tehsils and city's crossings. The police will have to face disciplinary action, he maintained.

India: Gujarat owes over Rs 2.40 lakh crore in public debt

Gandhinagar, Jul 3 (PTI) With a steep rise of over Rs 23,000 crore in one year, Gujarat's public debt now stands at Rs 2,40,652 crore as per the revised estimates of 2018-19, the Legislative Assembly was informed on Wednesday.

Responding to a written query raised by Congress MLA Niranjan Patel during the Question Hour, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who handles the Finance portfolio, said in his written reply that as per the revised estimates for 2018-19, Gujarat owes Rs 2,40,652 crore, a rise of Rs 23,314 crore from 2017-18.

India: Karnataka: Man gets 7-year RI for rape

Mangaluru, Jul 3 (PTI) A court here has sentenced a man to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for raping a woman on the pretext of marriage and cheating her after she delivered a child.

The Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court judge Sayeedunisa who pronounced the judgement on Tuesday also directed the 34-year old man to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 for the offences committed.

Umesh from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district, had befriended the girl when he was working as a supplier in a hotel at Narimogaru in Puttur taluk in 2009.

India: Centre has no plans to scrap sedition law

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) The Union government has no plans to repeal sedition law as it is needed to effectively combat anti-national, secessionist and terrorist elements, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai told Rajya Sabha Wednesday.

The minister made the statement in reply to a written question by TRS MP Banda Prakash who had asked if the government was mulling to scrap sedition law "which is a colonial-era law applicable on free citizens of the Republic".

India: West Bengal 4th state to exceed SC's 50-pc quota cap

Kolkata, Jul 3 (PTI) The Mamata Banerjee government's announcement of 10 per cent reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for the economically weaker sections (EWS) in the general category makes West Bengal the fourth state after Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Telangana to cross the 50 per cent quota cap fixed by the Supreme Court.

The announcement on Tuesday came six months after the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre approved a similar proposal.

India: Govt committed to disinvestment of Air India: Minister

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) The government is committed to the disinvestment of national carrier Air India and the plan is to make it more operationally viable before disinvesting it, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told the Rajya Sabha Wednesday.

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, the minister said there has been a steady improvement in finances of Air India and the airline is set to make profit during the current financial year.

He said Air India is currently making a revenue of Rs 15 crore everyday.
