India: BJP MP's security men thrash toll plaza staff

Agra (UP), Jul 6 (PTI) Security men accompanying BJP MP and Scheduled Castes commission chairman Ram Shankar Katheria opened fire in the air and allegedly thrashed employees at a toll post here on Saturday, police said.

The police have registered an FIR against Katheria and another person after the early morning fracas at the toll plaza on the inner ring road.

An aide to the MP claimed that the security guards opened fire in self-defence when they were attacked at the toll plaza.

India: Teacher stopped from sacrificing girl child in Assam

Udalguri (Assam), Jul 6 (PTI) A school teacher and his family reportedly tried to sacrifice a three-year-old in their house in Udalguri district of lower Assam Saturday, but their plans were hindered when the locals intervened and informed the police and media.

The teacher and his son were injured in firing by the police who tried to control the situation, a police official said.

The situation turned violent when people of Ganakpara village in the district called in the police and the media after noticing smoke emanating from the teacher's house.

India: HC acquits man serving 30 yrs jail in gang-rape case

New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) A man, who in 2014 was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for raping a woman after confining her in a house for nine months, has been acquitted by the Delhi High Court, which said the case was filled with "inconsistencies and improbabilities".

Justice C Hari Shankar allowed the appeal of the man, Shiva, against the trial court's 2014 verdict by which he was convicted and awarded 30 years jail term.

The high court said the man shall be released from the jail forthwith unless his incarceration is required in any other case.

India: JD(S)-Cong govt under threat as 14 MLAs resign

Bengaluru, Jul 6 (PTI) Fourteen MLAs of the ruling JD(S)-Congress alliance in Karnataka have submitted their resignation to the Speaker, putting a question mark on the survival of the 13-month-old government.

If the resignations are accepted, the wobbly ruling coalition will lose majority in the 224-member Assembly as its strength will come down to 104.

India's Jaipur named as World Heritage Site by UNESCO

NEW DELHI, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Jaipur, known as the pink city of India, was declared as a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Saturday, officials said.

"In yet another landmark achievement, India's nomination of the Jaipur City, Rajasthan got inscribed today on the World Heritage List of UNESCO during the 43rd Session of the World Heritage Committee held at Baku, Azerbaijan," a statement by India's cultural ministry said.

Govt rolls out PPP model for faster development of railways projects

New Delhi, July 5; GANASHAKTI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 5 in her maiden Budget speech said that the Indian railways will use Public Private Partnership (PPP) model for faster development, rolling stock manufacturing and the delivery of freight.

Railways will need Rs 50 lakh crore between 2018 to 2030 to complete the sanctioned projects, she said.

Indian Railways set a target of 100 percent electrification of tracks by 2022 and achieved Rs 1,320 crore capex in FY19, said a report by Stewart & Mackertich.

India: Another rape case shocks Dakshina Kannada district

Mangaluru, Jul 6 (PTI) Days after the news of a gang rape of a dalit student by her college mates sent shock waves among people, a minor girl from the same community has been sexually assaulted by a labourer in Dakshina Kannada district.

The accused identified as Ajith, a construction worker from Madnoor in Puttur was arrested in this conneciton Friday, police sources said.

The victim, a 15-year-old school student, has been admitted to hospital.

Delhi HC dismisses plea seeking SIT probe into attack on temple

New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Friday dismissed a PIL seeking SIT probe into the attack on a temple in the walled city here, saying that the police was already taking action and nothing can be done overnight.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar said the petitioner in the instant matter expected the culprits behind the June 30 incident to be arrested overnight and observed that the expectation was "too high".

The court said that three FIRs were already registered in connection with the incident and investigation was already going on.

India: HC grants one month parole to Rajiv case convict Nalini

Chennai, Jul 5 (PTI) The Madras High Court Friday granted one month parole to Nalini Sriharan, serving life sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, after she argued her plea in person for seeking the relief to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding.

A division bench of Justice M M Sundaresh and Justice M Nirmal Kumar also directed the Tamil Nadu government to finalise the process for her release within ten days.

It ordered Nalini not to give any interviews and not to meet any political person while out on parole.

India: Lokpal gets over Rs 100 crore Budget

New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI) Anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal has got over Rs 100 crore Budget allocation, whereas Rs 35.55 crore outlay has been earmarked for the probity watchdog Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for 2019-20.

In its interim budget for the ongoing fiscal presented on February 1, the government had not changed the allocation of Rs 4.29 crore for the Lokpal earmarked during 2018-19.

The anti-corruption body got its chairperson and members in March this year.
