India: Alarming increase in rape, sexual assault cases in Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 21 (PTI) There has been a rise of 22 per cent in rape cases in Mumbai and 51 per cent in instances of sexual assault from 2014-15 to 2018-19, according to the NGO Praja Foundation.

The NGO, in its report published on Thursday, said there has been an alarming increase in the number of crime cases against women and children in the metropolis.

India: 2 lynched in West Bengal over suspicion of cattle theft

Coochbehar (WB), Nov 22 (PTI) Two persons have been lynched over suspicion of cattle theft in Coochbehar district and 14 persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident, police said.

It took place on Thursday in Mathabanga area when Rabiul Islam and Prakash Das were ferrying two cows in a van.

Kashmir shuts down after a brief semblance of normalcy

Srinagar, Nov 22 (PTI) Most shops and other business establishments in Kashmir were closed on Friday, the third consecutive day of a Valley-wide shutdown following a brief semblance of normalcy.

On Wednesday, posters warning shopkeepers against opening their shutters as well as public transport operators appeared at several places in the city and elsewhere in the Valley, officials said.

This ended the sense of the last few weeks that life was getting back to normal.

The Governor of Amman, Saad Shehab, announced the cancellation of the conference “Interfaith Peace”, which was organised by the United Initiative for Religions Working in Jordan.

Israel detains Jerusalem governor, again

21 Nov 2019; MEMO: Israeli police today detained Jerusalem Governor Adnan Ghaith, according to eyewitnesses.

The detention came after police raided Ghaith’s residence in Jerusalem’s Silwan neighbourhood, the eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency.

Ghaith has been detained several times in recent months as part of Israel’s ongoing violations against Palestinian officials, activists and institutions in occupied Jerusalem.

India: No proposal to make Right to Water fundamental right: BJP Minister

New Delhi, Nov 21 (PTI) There is no proposal to make access to potable water a fundamental right, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Any such proposal is not under consideration of the government, the minister said during Question Hour.

He was replying to a question raised by BJP member Hema Malini.
