Ousted Navy secretary made secret deal with Trump: Pentagon chief

Washington, Nov 25 (AFP/PTI) The US defense secretary Monday defended the decision to sack his navy secretary, saying he went behind his back to make a deal with the White House over a convicted Navy SEAL's future.

Mark Esper told reporters Richard Spencer, the Navy's top civilian, admitted he had gone around Esper and Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley.

USA: 3 Maryland men exonerated after 36 years in prison

BALTIMORE (AP) — Three men incarcerated for 36 years in Maryland were exonerated Monday in the slaying of a Baltimore teenager after a review of their case.

Alfred Chestnut, Ransom Watkins and Andrew Stewart were released from custody hours after a judge cleared their convictions and prosecutors dropped the charges. They were teenagers when they were sentenced to life in prison in 1984.

Russia kills 3 civilians in Syria’s Idlib

25 Nov 2019; MEMO: At least three civilians were killed in Russian air strikes in the Idlib de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria, as reported by Anadolu Agency. 

The death toll from the attacks on residential areas in the Idlib de-escalation zone over the past month reached 75, including 13 children, said the White Helmets.

Israel Closes Down West Bank Mosque As Settlers Flock To Mark Jewish Holiday

RAMALLAH, Palestine, Nov 24 (NNN-WAFA) – Israeli forces closed down the Ibrahimi Mosque in the West Bank’s southern city of Hebron to Palestinians, as thousands of Israeli settlers flock into the city, to mark a Jewish holiday.

Israeli forces also shut a main road leading to Hebron’s central market, to allow Jewish settlers to march towards a historical site. Israeli forces forced Palestinian shop owners along the road, to close down and banned Palestinians from moving around the old city, which is, in fact, under Palestinian control.

PA: Escalation of settlers’ violence is a result of Pompeo’s announcement

24 Nov 2019; MEMO: On Friday, the Palestinian Authority (PA) condemned the escalation of Israeli settlers’ violence against Palestinian citizens and blamed the US for this escalation, Al-Watan Voice reported.

In a statement, the PA’s Foreign Ministry announced that the escalation against Palestinians “is part of an expansionist colonial project which is being carried out by the Israeli settlers and backed by the Israeli occupation.”

Pope slams nuclear deterrent, 'unspeakable horror' of Nagasaki

Nagasaki, Nov 24 (AFP) Pope Francis Sunday railed against atomic weapons, the nuclear deterrent and the growing arms trade, as he paid tribute to the victims of the "unspeakable horror" of the Nagasaki bomb.

In a highly symbolic visit to the Japanese city devastated by the nuclear attack in August 1945, Francis said nuclear weapons were "not the answer" to a desire for security, peace and stability.

"Indeed they seem always to thwart it," he said.
