Deadliest terror attack on journalists in US

Jarrod Ramos

29 June 2018; Five people have been killed and many are injured after a suspect gunman, named Jarrod Ramos by police, opened fire at the Capital Gazette newspaper office, in Annapolis, Maryland.

The people killed include the assistant news editor Rob Hiaasen.

Gazette is one of the oldest newspapers in the United States.

"This (Maryland shooting) was a targeted attack on the Capital Gazette. This person was prepared today to come in. He was prepared to shoot people. His intent was to cause harm," Anne Arundel County Deputy Police Chief William Krampf told reporters at a news conference.

Jimmy DeButts, the editor of the paper tweeted, “I’m in no position to speak, just know @capgaznews reporters & editors give all they have every day. There are no 40 hour weeks, no big paydays – just a passion for telling stories from our community,” he said.

CNN’s Brian Stelter wrote, “Thursday's attack at the Capital Gazette newspaper is the deadliest day for journalism in America since 9/11”.

Capital Gazette staff writer Phil Davis questioned society's response to mass shootings. "If we're going to have a position in our society where all we offer each other is prayers, then where are we? Where are we as a society, where people die and that's the end of that story," he said.

"It makes you feel powerless. It makes you feel helpless. It removes all control from every facet of your life within only a few seconds once you understand what's happening," said Davis.

Former President Barack Obama said that shootings like the one in Annapolis, Maryland “seems to happen every few weeks, few months.”
