India: Former Minister A Elumalai succumbs to COVID-19

Puducherry August 12 (PTI) Former Local Administration Minister of Puducherry A Elumalai succumbed to COVID-19 in centrally administered JIPMER on Wednesday.

Elumalai (53) had tested positive for the infection and was admitted to JIPMER on Tuesday, Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar told PTI.

Elumalai is survived by wife and three sons.

He was Local Administration Minister in the Congress Ministry headed by the then Chief Minister N Rangasamy in 2001.

India: Rebel Congress legislator disqualified in Puducherry

Puducherry, Jul 10 (PTI) Puducherry Assembly Speaker V P Sivakolundhuon Friday ordered disqualification of rebel Congress legislator N Dhanavelou under the provisions of the Anti-Defection Act.

Secretary to Assembly Mounusamy told P T I that the Speaker issued the order disqualifying Dhanavelou as a member of the House invoking provisions of the Anti-Defection Act.

Indian PM non-committal on helping states tide over fiscal woes: CM

Puducherry, May 12 (PTI) Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was non-committal on fiscal assistance to states despite them apprising him of the financial sufferings during a video conference.

Therefore, there was no other option for the Union Territory except to borrow from the Reserve Bank of India to tide over the current fiscal crisis, he told reporters here on Monday night after participating in the video conference of chief ministers with Modi.

India: Withdraw new provisions in NPR, Pondy CM tells Amit Shah

Puducherry, Mar 4 (PTI): Chief Minister of Puducherry V Narayanasamy on Wednesday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging him to withdraw the new provisions in the National Population Register (NPR) 2020 as they were causing panic among the people.

In a letter to Shah, the Chief Minister said the population census should be as per the 2010 format and the additional provisions now included in the NPR should be withdrawn.

India: Mend your ways or quit: Puducherry CM to Lt guv Bedi

Puducherry, Feb 12 (PTI) Stepping up his attack on Lt Governor Kiran Bedi, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Wednesday said she should either mend her ways or quit, as the union territory assembly saw two ministers slamming her for "causing hindrances" in implementing government decisions.

The government was in an unenviable situation due to 'lack' of allocation of sufficient funds by the Centre and "continued hindrances by the Lt Governor in the implementation of welfare schemes," he told the Union Terrritory assembly.

India: AIADMK against move to set up casino in Puducherry

Puducherry Dec 28 (PTI): The opposition AIADMK on Saturday opposed the move of the territorial government to introduce a casino under the garb of promoting tourism in Puducherry.

AIADMK legislator Vayyapuri Manikandan told newsmen here that "It is really mind-boggling that the Chief Minister V Narayanasamy has pointed out in no uncertain terms at a press meet on Friday that facilities like a casino would help government mop up revenue as Puducherry is a tourist destination."

India: Govt staff held for sexual assault on minor girl

Puducherry, May 16 (PTI) A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl at her house in a village near here Thursday, police said.

The man, a Puducherry government electricity department employee, was noting down the power consumption details at the nine-year-old girl's house when the incident occurred, they said.

She was alone as the parents had gone shopping.

India: Pondy CM demands Lt Governor's resignation

Puducherry, May 5 (PTI) Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy Sunday urged Kiran Bedi to quit as Lt Governor after the Madras High Court had recently held that the Lt Governor "cannot interfere in the day-to-day activities of the elected government in the union territory."

The High court had laid down very clearly that the Lt Governor had no powers to act independently and that she must work "in tandem with the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers," he told reporters here.

India: Juvenile held for raping and killing woman

Puducherry, Dec 25 (PTI) A juvenile was apprehended for allegedly raping and killing a 25-year-old woman at her home in Kuyavarpalayam village here, police said Tuesday.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rahool Alwal said the woman's mother had filed a complaint with police on December 18 that her daughter was found dead in her home with her throat slit.

The victim was alone after her mother and brother had left for work.

Post-mortem examination suggested that the woman was raped and then killed, the police said.
