KANPUR: Like the past years, the festival of Bakrid was also observed traditionally here today. Simplicity marked the occasion. It was a heyday for the butchers who did not compromise with their rate. They even asked for more than normal daily charge.
What was worth astonishing was the absence of persons who used to collect the goatskins on such a special occasion.
Well, things have changed. The skin of sacrificial goats has no value at present. There is no market for the raw skin as no buyer takes an interest in investing money in the bulk purchase of the goat skins that remain available in abundance during this festival.
One person told there was a time when takers for the goatskin were collecting it on their own system. Now the rate has gone down extremely and few dare to buy it.
As this skin is the basic ingredient for making leather, the situation seems to have been changed comparatively.
This city is widely known for leather businesses. Tanneries exist here but the buyers for raw skin evade purchase.
