Washington; 07 Nov 2020 (UMMN): Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden had earned enough electoral college votes to win US presidential election. As of 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Biden had 273 electoral college votes, which was more than the 270 needed to win. Trump had 214.
“I am honoured and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me,” Biden said in a statement released on Saturday. “It’s time for America to unite... And to heal.”
Kamala Harris will become the nation’s first black, South Asian and female vice president,
Polls closed on Nov. 3, but it took days to count many of the ballots that were submitted before election day, either by mail or in person.
Trump is questioning the accuracy of the vote count in some states. “This election is far from over,” he said in a statement released on Saturday.
Trump has accused the Democrats of trying to “steal” the election with “illegal votes,” but offered no evidence to back his claims. In his statement, Trump said his team planned to continue challenging the results in court beginning on Monday.
According to CNN, if the results stand, Trump will remain president until the end of 2020. Biden will officially take his place following a ceremony in January.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Biden and the soon-to-be U.S. vice-president, Kamala Harris, on Twitter.
