India: 16000 Challan worth Rs 2.5 cr mistakenly by Kanpur traffic police

Kanpur: As many as 16000 challan amounting to nearly Rs 2.5 crore were issued by the traffic police in just one and a half month (45 days).

Additionally, all the challan were issued for traffic violations at a single intersection near Fazal Ganj Fire Brigade in the city.

Were the issuance of challan a blunder of the authorities concerned? It was realised that the faulty international transport management system caused it.

As a result,16,000 people being wrongfully challaned Rs 2.40 crore on traffic violations.

The administration has taken back most of the challan during this period and assured that the remaining ones will also be soon withdrawn.

The massive error came to notice after the traffic department was flooded with complaints from commuters who said they have received e-challan despite following all traffic rules.

On being checked the automated traffic monitoring system, it was found that the ITMS was issuing exaggerated and incorrect penalties worth crores.

It was not clear how many commuters have already paid the challan that they were wrongfully issued.

Traffic officials are now being manually monitored in  city's specific areas.

The commuters, however, are now complaining of heavy traffic jams at various places in the city.

The residents urged the authorities to not to penalise at least those who are following all the  traffic rules.
