Niger’s neighbors running out of options as defense chiefs meet to discuss potential military force

NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — West African defense chiefs met Thursday to discuss the crisis in Niger after coup leaders there ignored their deadline to step down, leaving the region’s countries with few options in their effort to restore democratic rule.

Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, was overthrown in July and remains under house arrest with his wife and son in the capital, Niamey.

Niger PM in Chad as US, Russia urge diplomatic option in crisis

N’DJAMENA, Aug 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Niger’s military-appointed prime minister made an unannounced visit to neighbouring Chad as West African states set talks for mulling possible military intervention to reverse his country’s coup and the United States and Russia urged a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, a civilian appointed by the military rulers who ousted Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, arrived in Chad for a “working visit,” the Chadian government said on Facebook.

Zambia seizes private plane from Egypt carrying $5.7m in cash

If convicted, Bazoum could face the death penalty, according to Niger’s penal code.

Ethiopian airstrike on a town square in the restive Amhara region kills 26, health official says

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — An airstrike on a crowded town square in Ethiopia’s restive Amhara region killed at least 26 people and wounded more than 55 others, a senior health official said Monday, days after authorities asserted that calm had been restored in the area.

Local militia members have been clashing with Ethiopia’s military over efforts to disband them, and last week the military retook key Amhara towns by force.

China's CITIC delivers final section of Algeria's landmark East-West Highway project

ALGIERS, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A landmark Algerian highway built to connect 17 provinces has been completed with China's CITIC Construction delivering its final 84-km segment on Saturday.

As the final leg of the ambitious East-West Highway project, the 84-km project stretches from Drean in the easternmost province of El Tarf to the town of Raml Souk bordering Tunisia.
